With how unprofitable the whole industry is, that would essentially bury it for decades. Sure, models would stay and data centres wouldn't evaporate, but the cash to train the new models, run servers for the existing ones, etc. would be gone.

The industry is heavily driven by stock speculation. The whole "AI" endeavor is essentially subsidised by insane mountain of investors' money and stock speculation. The moment the biggest player falls, it will essentially cut the funding to the whole industry.
