Very few data centers have much staff at all. Some of the large co-locations have a handful (emphasis on handful) because they host racks for companies, etc..
But all support once everything is online is done remotely. When a part fails, the vendor sends a tech to replace it.

And most of this country is in serious drought. Shut these fuckers down.

Municipalities need to start viewing these facilities as heavy industrial sites, and zone accordingly. Also, they need to provide their own power generation, which needs to be regulated like any utility in the community.

Here in Oregon they had to shut down a data center due to lack of water. Now the company wants to dredge the Columbia River. I don’t understand how that makes more water, but it would be an environmental disaster.

My opinion:
To me, it’s more than the pollution.
It’s more than the ridiculous waste of water.

To me, the entire PURPOSE behind data centers is deadly to the human race (and maybe all life on Earth).

The best case is that AI centers help them advertise to us.
Worst case - they control weapons.

And my small rural TN County’s Mayor is pushing for this as of his life depended on it. 1 job. Higher utility rates that have already gotten to high the poor can’t afford electricity. This is amoral and an act of violence on rural people.

Tax breaks for building something that nobody wants. WTF? They will be built tax or no tax so let them pay taxes.
