Imagine if all 50 states used fusion voting in the midterms—it could feel like night and day. Less “I win only if you lose” politics, and less of the negative partisanship that keeps the current system locked in place.

Fusion voting used to be legal in every state. Our two-party system isn’t inevitable; it’s a product of the rules. Fusion breaks the “wasted vote” trap—and with ~75% of Americans wanting more than two choices, that matters. @thebulwark.com @johnavlon.bsky.social @danielcantor.bsky.social
Fusion voting, in particular, is often cited as one of the most historically rooted but least understood reforms, allowing multiple parties to nominate the same candidate and giving voters a more expressive choice at the ballot box. @johnavlon.bsky.social @thebulwark.com
Great to be on the show! Lovely conversation on the need for fusion voting and how to reduce the ruinous, extreme partisan polarization inherent in our two-party system, (hopefully) replacing it with a healthy, vibrant multi-party democracy.
Law Forward moves to strike down Wisconsin’s fusion voting ban, calling 1897 law a partisan power grab that violates the state constitution.

How to reshape Congress + US politics without a constitutional amendment:
1️⃣ Pass ranked-choice voting in most states.
2️⃣ Re-legalize fusion voting in most states.
3️⃣ Pass proportional representation in most states.
Once most states have done 1-3, reconstructing Congress will move from dream to plan.
Our political system is dominated by a two party system that is drowning the American people in a vicious cycle of polarization that can only be fixed by empowering third parties. We need real reform.
Watch Borgen: no party has a majority—and that’s not chaos, it’s how democracy works. Coalition-building, compromise, and real progress. A reminder that multi-party systems can govern—and govern well.
"Meanwhile, equal shares of U.S. adults — 27% each — identified as either Democrats or Republicans"
We need reform to break the political duopoly and allow the majority to be heard.
New data shows 70%+ of Americans want more than just two political party choices. Yet our system traps voters in the “spoiler” or “wasted vote” problem. Without changing the rules, we stay stuck in the two-party doom loop. Fusion voting offers a way forward—learn more in my new piece in Democracy.
We need to repeal the laws that artificially created — and still sustain — a two-party duopoly. @danielcantor.bsky.social
Our own history points the way: reviving fusion voting and building fusion parties can reopen the political system to broader coalitions and real voter choice.
New piece out in Democracy: A Journal of Ideas on the history and promise of fusion voting. Once legal nationwide, fusion helped build reform coalitions before being banned by major parties. With today’s two-party system struggling to solve public problems, it may be time to revisit it.
We need to repeal the laws that artificially created and continue to sustain a two-party duopoly. The starting point is our own history. @danielcantor.bsky.social democracyjournal.org/magazine/79/...
"I have been devoted ever since to the project of trying to revive fusion voting—once legal everywhere... and there are efforts underway in probably seven states to try to revive it."
@danielcantor.bsky.social explains to @johnavlon.bsky.social why fusion voting may help save our country.
"In America, 20%, a minority faction of the country, is in total charge, waging war on its own people. That is only possible because of the way the two party system distorts... It's a bad way to run a country."
@danielcantor.bsky.social explains how the two party system distorts democracy.
The same question, @danielcantor.bsky.social , can be asked about "progressivism" - whether of the Obamunist or Clintonoid varieties.
The answer is simple: low-information, or "swing", voters who think politics is entertainment instead of civic duty. www.thebulwark.com/p/maga-isnt-...
"I want a system that incentivizes, bargaining and compromise, and I want a system that incentivizes the citizenry to get organized. You want people to be in parties. Politics is a team sport. It's not an individual sport."
@danielcantor.bsky.social makes the case for fusion voting.
In states where fusion voting is legal, minor parties can remain both independent and relevant — building their own identity while helping shape outcomes through coalition politics. @danielcantor.bsky.social
Fingers crossed. @unitedkansas.bsky.social You can watch the oral argument itself at this link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=We3i...
The Kansas Court of Appeals just heard arguments on whether the state’s 100+ year ban on fusion voting should stand. Judges pressed both sides on free speech, party rights, and the state’s interest in limiting ballot labels. A major test for voter choice—likely headed to the Kansas Supreme Court.
Exactly! We could learn a thing or two.
Great show! A Danish political drama from 15 years ago turns out to be the most clarifying thing you can watch right now about what American democracy is missing.

Fusion’s power is simple: it creates meaningful new political identities. @danielcantor.bsky.social
It lets voters — left, right, and center — support their values without being forced to back a party whose broader agenda they can’t accept. More choice. More voice.
Awww bless, the Americans have *finally* discovered Borgen... 15 years after it first aired!
