Like, did Isildur cut the Ring off Sauron's defeated/seemingly-dead finger with the weregild purpose or was it more self-defense like the movie?

I just found it odd that the Ring chose that moment in the Anduin River to slip off his finger. Either it wasn't aware of its surroundings and just sensed the orcs or it realized it couldn't fully master the will of Isildur. 🤔

Weregild: compensation paid to victims' family for murder to stave off vengeance and further murder.
Heirloom: treasured possession passed down in the family.

If you were the essence of Sauron, would you want to be either after (eventually) permanently separated from your body?

Watching the PJ Fellowship of the Rings extended edition and thought it odd that The One Ring slipped off Isildur's finger during his swim across the Anduin.
Until it hit me that the movie calls it an Heirloom while in the books he calls it a weregild. BIG difference.
