I doubt the founders realized that a majority party with the choice to hold him accountable could be this corrupt, and thus disincentivized to remove him. Their protective proximity to his power enables and encourages their grift.

The founders believed that if a madman became president, members of Congress would serve the country’s interest and remove him from office. That seemed a reliable system to safeguard the republic.
