Through an oddly formalistic strategy, many delude themselves into believing that everything will be fine because Trump isn't actually disobeying any judicial orders. The idea of "rule of law" pressuposed by them strikes me as severely weakened and naive, if not cynical.

Of course, such a crisis would be highly dangerous, but the obsession with preventing it at all costs has been equally risky. We're witnessing the continuous erosion of the rule of law. The part of the judiciary that is not applauding is refraining from stepping in.

There is a line of thinking in the U.S. political and judicial world today that I really can't understand. Some experts suggest that courts shouldn't rule against the executive branch because if Trump doesn't accept the ruling, a dangerous constitutional crisis would follow.

It's hard to imagine in detail what the full consequences of today will be. The only certainty at the moment is that they will be big and bad. We'll be 'walking in darkness' for a while, as Tocqueville said we must when the past fails to illuminate the future.

I feel that with the results of the US election we have crossed some sort of historical tipping point. The world as a whole is definitively further away from the democratic and liberal constellation that has underpinned public life as many know and value it.
