This is a dangerous thing to say because it blinds us to the obvious truth: we need better candidates. Candidates like Mamdani that can actually articulate a vision for a better future and a plan to get there.
If we nominate a presidential candidate who can do that, we can win.

A socialist mayor in Portland next!
“Mayor Wilson’s decision to unleash the police on our most vulnerable neighbors on the very day they lose their food assistance is an act of stunning inhumanity[.]”
As far as I can tell, Curtis Sliwa's main position is that we should shut down kill shelters for animals and replace them with kill shelters for people.
$300,000 seems quite low for being falsely imprisoned for 5 years. The city is lucky to get away with that settlement.
Think of the opportunities that Adam Gregg was robbed of.
Trump has escalated his attack on Portland by deploying more Feds to Portland for the purpose of intimidating and silencing our community, so that we comply in advance with his fascist regime. Don’t acquiesce. Join an org, talk to your neighbors and build solidarity networks to keep each other safe.
Related: Today at the Community and Public Safety Committee Meeting, Councilor Kanal will introduce legislation to "codify the City’s commitment to
safeguarding and supporting immigrant and refugee communities through binding municipal law."

It seems like you might be asked to weigh in on whether to allow the ICE building to stay in Portland. I understand that even on the anti-ICE side you have competing interests and that the bureaucracy is complex. Still, I urge you to try to do your best to hamstring ICE. We must destroy it.
That hasn't happened in this thread.
This is actually just police stenography. It's not reporting and it's poor journalism. Trusting it as you seem too is irresponsible.
As if cops aren't ready and willing to fuck up anyone they can.
I'm really glad you are giving this serious thought. I'm sympathetic to the arguments from attorneys fighting for immigrants, but I worry they are not totally considering the long term. Not just how do we effectively fight ICE, but how do we end ICE.
In anticipation of the next few days I want to make it clear that the ICE Permit revocation issue is a land use question which means that city councilors will be operating in a quasi judicial manner when it gets to us after the investigation. We can be exempt from voting on it if we r deemed biased.
Austria, famously a country who has never had a problem with violence.
Maybe we are a violent country because we are categorically uninterested in learning any lessons at all about how to reduce violence/crime.
Great to point out. I think even a little bit of research can lead someone to the conclusion that policing and incarceration do not really reduce crime and likely have the opposite effect, creating more crime.
Providing for people's needs does reduce crime.
That is very cool. Is it related to unions, like a union of unions? Or is it like a replacement for a union for some or all people? Or do unions and this organization work in parallel?
Here's a video account of the altercation outside of the Central Library in Portland. And again, the police narrative is shit and skews the perception of events. www.opb.org/article/2025...
Anyone with progressive or leftist politics in Beaverton, we're having another discussion night at Loyal Legion. Let's organize. I'm excited to talk about Measure 34-346 and how to strangle it in its crib.
Here's the optional RSVP, Wed. 9/10, 6PM to 7:30 PM: actionnetwork.org/events/beave....
The grand jury is not a high bar. They only receive the prosecutor's perspective and they are subject to a lot of pressure to rule their way.
There's one week left in the election division's polling about it: www.portland.gov/vote/improve.
I bet there's people against it responding. I just hope people in favor of ranked choice are responding too.
Cops are not trustworthy is a lesson that everyone must learn. Media needs to stop being credulous about police lies, and anytime you hear a cop's account of events, your first instinct should be do disbelieve it.
They’re picking jurors for Luigi this week
Repost so everyone remembers this:
Jury Nullification is when
Jurors vote to acquit,
not just based on the law.
But on wether the application
of that law
Truly serves justice.
I appreciate the info. Now I know to oppose that practice.
Vienna still has a nonzero unhoused population. What cracks exist in that system and how could we close those cracks in a system we built in Portland? How can we get 100% of people housed?
Check out this story about PTU, @portlanddsa.bsky.social, and @councilorgreen.bsky.social speaking out for a @homeforward.bsky.social tenant who was nearly evicted. Quick collective action helped keep him housed.
Leeor lays out some of PTU's demands for @homeforward.bsky.social.
Isn't it normal for hermit crabs to jump into different shells? I should just go read a bunch about this.
The pearl clutching about y'all not breaking the law is crazy. It's such a nothing burger, but a bunch of chuds are just desperate to score points against you.
Man, saying poem instead of letter really makes me wish Bluesky had an edit button....
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
It actually drives me insane to see it on that slave pen. Disgusting to pervert those words that way.
