Inside America’s carpet capital: an empire and its toxic legacy The Georgia carpet industry’s long use of PFAS, known as forever chemicals, polluted drinking water and the environment across swaths of the South.

This investigation shows how powerful carpet companies like Shaw Industries ignored warnings as regulators turned a blind eye, while communities downstream now live with contaminated wells and soaring cancer risks.

In my own book, Kill Shot, CDC's EIS played a key role in solving a mysterious fungal meningitis outbreak. Not only active EIS officers, but those who trained in the program and who were working at state health departments. All were key to saving hundreds of lives.
