How did PFAS chemicals contaminate the water and environment in parts of Georgia and Alabama? The reporters and filmmakers behind a collaborative project investigating the issue discussed what it was like to bring it to life in "Contaminated: The Carpet Industry’s Toxic Legacy."
Posts by Jason Dearen
This investigation shows how powerful carpet companies like Shaw Industries ignored warnings as regulators turned a blind eye, while communities downstream now live with contaminated wells and soaring cancer risks.

Researchers have linked high levels of some PFAS types in human blood to serious health problems. It’s an issue that comes into sharp focus in northwest Georgia, home to some of the world’s largest carpet companies.
ICE is using full-body “burrito” bags to restrain detainees for hours during deportations. Is it cruel and unusual punishment? An @apnews.com investigation.

Great story about a remarkable moment in history: “A total surrender following a few hours later with a cordial meeting in the AP bureau with an armed and battle-garbed North Vietnamese officer with his aide over warm Coke and pastries? That is how the Vietnamese war ended for me today.”

Speaking of CDC, I was asked to make a reading list of books about mysterious diseases / outbreaks recently so thought I'd share: shepherd.com/best-books/m...
Yes, it's available via Audible and libraries on audiobook so have at it!
(And I know Bad Blood isn't really about an outbreak but it's so good for so many reasons I included)
In my own book, Kill Shot, CDC's EIS played a key role in solving a mysterious fungal meningitis outbreak. Not only active EIS officers, but those who trained in the program and who were working at state health departments. All were key to saving hundreds of lives.

Congrats on the story. Looking forward to the Frontline
My book Kill Shot was apparently used to train Meta AI. This isn’t a surprise but raises so many questions. Anyone know if there’s anything to do / being done about this? Curious what authors can do
Thanks @pakinamamer.bsky.social for the heads up

Lots of great indie bookshops here but North Figueroa books in Highland Park seems like a place to check out. Also storiesla is a cool spot
I’ll buy it from my local shop. You plan any LA readings?
