LOP 31 (29 May 1976) The General Strike in Leeds - no. 1 of a series
LOP 32 (12 June 1976) The General Strike in Leeds - no. 2 of a series
LOP 33 (26 June 1976) The General Strike in Leeds - no. 3 of a series
Lots of #GeneralStrike100 stuff around at the moment as we approach its centenary. Fifty years ago, Leeds Other Paper looked back at events of 50 years earlier with a series on how the 1926 General Strike unfolded in and around Leeds.

LOP 576 (7 April 1989) headlined: Mass peace entry fools Menwith Hill security plans.
On this day in 1989 @cnduk.bsky.social campaigners invaded the US spy base at Menwith Hill. As reported in Leeds Other Paper at the time, the anti-war protest was an #AprilFool from @yorkshirecnd.bsky.social.

The owls are not what they seem...
Ah, the good old Leeds owl.
Leeds Other Paper used to have one on its masthead, which changed a bit over the years but remained an owl with attitude.

Pleased to hear it!
Just spotted a copy of a special 1926 General Strike issue of the Leeds Citizen in these archives - a great resource.
And here's the front and back pages of the last LOP (Northern Star) for you.

Apparently, other suggestions for LOP included Leeds Mercury and even Leeds Streetfighter.

West Yorkshire is to get a new independent news and investigative outlet with @leedsnewlocalpaper.bsky.social - it won't be Leeds Other Paper, but it'll be much better than nowt. To mark this good news, here's a piece about LOP from its final issue in 1994, by which time it was called Northern Star.

🚨 Final call ‼️
We're officially building and we need a name.
Have your say now.
A name, eh? Some of the rejected early suggestions for what became Leeds Other Paper were Leeds Aire, Soot, and Black Snow (there was a lot more heavy industry around back then).

Congratulations. Now the hard work starts...
Remember Leeds Other Paper, you say. That's just what we do here.
It's happening! Those of you that are old enough to remember Leeds Other Paper (me) might be pleased to hear of a new alternative paper launching in Leeds. It will be different of course, but still good.
Congratulations. Now the hard work starts...
It's up to 450 now - 50 more needed.
Anybody else out there ready to pledge to support some quality local journalism in West Yorkshire?
