In another first for FHJ,here's their first video article, a conversation/reflection about the Australian experience of legalising Assisted Dying. Thoughtful, courteous, curious, balanced.

Chair @laylamoran.bsky.social said “It feels unthinkable that specialist care services for those who are close to passing away are somehow undervalued in the NHS. And yet that is the heartbreaking reality…”

Regardless of the outcome on #AssistedDying we need good quality #palliativecare in the UK. It affects many more people than the AD bill ever will. @mariecurieuk.bsky.social new research is sobering and a call to action 👇

Thank you @shaunlintern.bsky.social for covering our new Marie Curie research.

🚨1 in 3 people in England and Wales die with unmet palliative care needs.

🚨That’s 170,000 people each year.

🚨Meaning that every three minutes someone dies with suffering that could and should be alleviated, but is not.

Building better trust and promoting knowledge and awareness of palliative and end-of-life care among marginalised groups, including explicit focus on the difference between palliative care and intentionally hastening death, is essential.

3 months ago 0 0 1 0

We also found a dose–response relationship between
socioeconomic position and awareness and knowledge of palliative care.

i.e. people from higher socioeconomic groups are less likely to think palliative care = hastening death.

3 months ago 0 0 1 0

To be specific, people of Asian ethnicity and people of Black, Caribbean or African ethnicity were more likely to believe that palliative care involves giving medicines to people to shorten their lives.

This held after adjusting for age, gender and socioeconomic position.

The Health and Social Care Committee’s evaluation of palliative care in England was published yesterday.

It’s hugely important, not least in the context of the assisted dying bill.

It’s had almost no media coverage.

Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill Committee - Reports, special reports and government responses - Committees - UK Parliament Report, special report and government response publications for Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill Committee.

The report of the House of Lords Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill Committee has been published.

Less of a ‘report’ than I was expecting - more a compilation of evidence - but useful nonetheless.

Dying with dignity Investment in palliative care is crucial to both easing the burden on hospitals and ensuring terminally ill people can have a good death

“The difference between this [hospice] and the hospital is the dignity”

Thank you Sarah Dawood for writing this important article on dying with dignity - and to the patients and families at St Raphael’s for sharing their experiences.

The Association for Palliative Medicine has produced a Myth Buster on assisted dying and the Terminally Ill Adults bill.

The debate must be based on evidence, not soundbites and spin.

It’s an essential tool for Peers, journalists and other commentators.
