Appending my thread of *stuff I do*, because that stuff is still very cool even when I'm not on the internet 💚

Farewell, internet.

I will be offline for April -- away from the scroll, frolicking in the forest. If you need to contact me, I will periodically check my email at annethegnome/at/gmail.com. Or you can whisper your thoughts into a mushroom circle. I'll hear.

I talked about OSR, though, so that means I can still stream under “tabletop roleplaying games” instead of being banished to hellscape of “just chatting”

Tonight on stream I pitched chat the horror game I’m writing, read them the wikipedia article on the 4 kinda of alienation of labour, taught them html & css, giggled about Andy Weir, discussed the “reparative read“ in queer media analysis, and ranted about disability rights.

A normal ttrpg stream 🤩

From his interview, it seems like he’s actually a bit more clueless and just sees his liberalism as objective and not a stance at all — like a lot of ppl but it’s funny when it’s a sci-fi novelist

I can’t imagine the high of being a journalist and realising your interviewee is confiding in you way too much and giving you absolute GOLD when you thought it was gonna be a fluff piece

“it’s been 10 years since the media cared what I had to say about anything so I kind of forgot to watch my words when I have a film in theaters. In a couple months I’ll be back in my cave writing novels and no one will care again.”

LMAO give this man media training he is DROWNING

Ok this is actually really funny

Andy Weir fighting for his LIFE after thinking the interviewer was just there to yap

This literally happened on Gilmore Girls, except Lorelai is wittier

Seeking suggestions for panelists!🎙️✨

May's #TTRPG panel will be on 🏠 long-term home games 🎲: how to start, keep it fresh, & keep it from fizzling out. I want to talk to ttrpg creators who have experience both succeeding & failing keeping an unbroadcasted game rolling for the long haul.

they were always saying it -- now there's just a mic in front of their face so we hear

UGH

This article must be lacking context because there is no way Andy Weir believes he puts "no politics or social commentary into [his] stories at all." Right??? He can't just be some guy trying to right about *space* and keeps accidently stumbling into themes. Right???????????

Panels are livestreamed at twitch.tv/gnome_anne & are held at 3pm PT on a Friday (consider time zones!)

Priority always goes to PoC & ppl of marginalized genders

Panels are co-ordinated & produced by @samsighs.bsky.social

Feel free to suggest yourself or tag someone you want to hear from! 💚

I have zero context but LET ME GUESS they built up an incredible sense of foreboding and unease and then shoehorned a bunch of milquetoast explanations interspliced with scenes that seem to be there only for shock value?

yeah, autistically this can be even *harder* since sometimes we kinda fumble the execution and it doesn't quite land 😬 I try to avoid it with strangers for the same reason!

lol you aren't a stranger, so I can read your tone a bit more

3 weeks ago 1 0 1 0

One last thing: jokes. Tone is hard to read in text. If you are a stranger (have never interacted with someone before), a joke is probably not a great opener unless it is *very clear* that it is a joke. I’m talking “knock knock” or the like. ESPECIALLY don’t open with a “roast” or critical joke

And I know you’re thinking “those are bots“ and some surely are, but some I know to be real people who are actually great communicators in person.

And those messages would make sense if ppl started with “I agree” “I disagree” or “That reminds me of”

3 weeks ago 17 0 1 0

it often feels like ppl are just doing word-association in the replies.

“I like pancakes.”
“Pancakes have wheat in them.”

Is that good? Bad? Are you just sharing? Please give me some context. I’m happy to chat but I’m so confused.

3 weeks ago 16 0 1 0

Ppl often repeat elements of the original message & it’s confusing: did you not read it correctly? are you restating for emphasis?

“D&D is fun at the right table, but im surprised my friends actual love story games!”
“My D&D game has been going for 14 years. you just need to find the right table.”

3 weeks ago 14 0 1 0

Often, a reply without context feels like a disagreement when it might not be, especially around heated topics.

“Here are some alternatives to using LLMs in your work:”
”Just telling ppl to not use LLMs isn’t enough! We need to stop hating on LLMs & start making viable alternatives!”

Wut?
