Yes. The old days of the internet - Usenet, IRC, small site forums for specific labels or topics, the earlier social networks. I helped create a wonderful one to me back in early 2010‘s on a platform called Ning that crumbled into obscurity as it monetized.

Nothing like the VC to exit circle.

In essence, all good ideas eventually become monetized out of usefulness.
