To Women & Equalities Committee
We, the undersigned, write to express serious and urgent concerns about the actions of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) and the apparent unwillingness of the Women and Equalities Committee (WEC) to investigate them.
It is becoming increasingly clear that the EHRC is no longer operating as an impartial human rights body. Over the past several years, its leadership has shifted in a direction that appears ideologically driven, hostile to trans equality, and closely aligned with lobbying groups who advocate for the removal of legal protections for transgender people. These groups - including Sex Matters, Policy Exchange, and the LGB Alliance - have played a significant role in reshaping public discourse and influencing legal interpretations of the Equality Act 2010.
We are calling on the Women and Equalities Committee to launch an immediate and transparent inquiry into:
- The EHRC’s internal decision-making processes regarding the definition of “sex” under the Equality Act 2010;
- All communications, meetings, and correspondence between the EHRC and external lobbying organisations from 2020 to the present;
- The EHRC’s advice to government departments, ministers, and the courts—especially its role in shaping the outcome of For Women Scotland v The Lord Advocate [2024] UKSC 59.
As transgender people and allies, we are gravely concerned that this advice, and the EHRC’s developing policy stance have been influenced not by human rights or evidence, but by ideological lobbying and political convenience. We must understand who the EHRC has been speaking to, what was said, and why these decisions were made. So many copaganda accounts on here are using tragedy of Lapu-Lapu Day to argue for more policing. Cops maybe running press conferences, but majority of people responding to this tragedy are community members offering & sharing resources & health care workers (many of whom are Filipinx immigrants).
Israel is using “suicide drones,” designed by Elbit Systems, to massacre sheltering Palestinian families in Gaza.
These drones have killed at least 30 Palestinians, including 14 children. Many universities in the US still hold ties to Elbit Systems.

1/6 We, like other trans led groups are digesting today’s Supreme Court ruling in For Women Scotland Limited v The Scottish Ministers [2025] UKSC 16 (‘FWS 2’)...
In addition to violating Mr. Mahdawi’s First Amendment rights, the Rubio Determination and Mr. Mahdawi’s unlawful detention also violates Mr. Mahdawi’s statutory rights and due process rights. PARTIES 8. Petitioner Mohsen Mahdawi is a Palestinian who was born and raised in a refugee camp in the West Bank. He is a lawful permanent resident of the United States and has been for the last ten years. He is a recent student of Columbia University, with an expected graduation date of May 2025. He has been admitted to a Master’s program at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (“SIPA”), to begin in the fall of 2025.
After growing up in a refugee camp, Mr. Mahdawi felt compelled to advocate for Palestinian human rights upon moving to the United States. 22. Mr. Mahdawi is also a committed Buddhist and believes in non-violence and empathy as a central tenet of his religion. In fall of 2021, he became the president of the Columbia University Buddhist Association and led it for two years. 23. In fall of 2023, Mr. Mahdawi co-founded the Palestinian Student Union (“Dar”) at Columbia University which “serves to engage with and celebrate Palestinian culture, history, and identity.” Mr. Mahdawi co-founded this organization with Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian lawful permanent resident who was also recently detained by ICE for his expressive conduct related to Palestine.
Mr. Mahdawi appeared in numerous televised interviews and print news articles regarding the military campaign in Gaza and related protests. In December of 2023, Mr. Mahdawi appeared on 60 Minutes where he shared that, as a child, he watched an Israeli soldier shoot and kill his best friend in the West Bank. 27. Throughout his time as a student and a leader of Dar and the Columbia University Buddhist Association, Mr. Mahdawi was always willing to engage in dialogue with people whose views and beliefs differed from his own. Mr. Mahdawi believed, and continues to believe, that more speech is the solution to disagreement, rather than less, and that empathy and understanding through communication are a way to resolve conflicts peacefully.
…and a peaceful political solution. Mr. Mahdawi gave speeches at several of these protests. In his speeches, Mr. Mahdawi advocated for Palestinian human rights, a permanent ceasefire, and a peaceful resolution that affirmed the human dignity of all. 25. During one protest, Mr. Mahdawi vocally denounced an unaffiliated passerby who made an antisemitic comment, chanting “shame on him”. Mr. Mahdawi stated that “we are against 2:25-cv-00389 Document 1 Filed 04/14/25 Page 6 of 19 7 antisemitism because antisemitism is a form of injustice, and injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” The confrontation was documented by the Columbia Spectator

Research article "From Inclusion to Transformation: Politics & Gender as a Critical Actor for Intersectional Political Science" by Ashlee Christoffersen & Orly Siow. Abstract begins: The popularization of intersectionality within political science, feminist scholarship, and activism has constituted nothing less than a paradigm shift (Hancock 2007a). Politics & Gender has been a critical actor in enabling change within our discipline. However, this development has been hard won and there remains much to be done to operationalize intersectionality in line with Black feminist theory, and to center women of color and other intersectionally marginalized groups within scholarship. This article both traces the evolution of intersectional approaches within Politics & Gender over two decades and articulates pathways for future gender and politics research which aims to employ intersectionality.
