Comment: Pending cuts to medical research would harm all in state | HeraldNet.com As UW medical scientists, we urge Washingtonians to defend the NIH’s life-saving research funding.

“Claims that NIH funds are funneled into university slush funds are absurd and untrue.” Funding cuts threaten shared equipment and staff that keep research running. Science funding is progress, not waste.

Ann Palmenberg was a trailblazer in virology and infectious disease research — but that was just for starters. A great scientist, mentor and friend, she lived every day to its fullest. news.wisc.edu/remembering-...

My talking points in recent interviews, please use as you see fit:
1.Every $1 in NIH funding returns ~$2.50 to the economy.
2.Every $1B in cuts from NIH extramural = 7500 lost employees, just in science.
3.These don't include priceless improvements in health.

Bacterial Virulence study section was cancelled this morning. The email was sent 2 hours before the meeting start time. I feel terrible for the investigators 😡

So sorry Brian, it’s just crazy, they’ve been telling us for days that the meeting will go on as planned, get your reviews in, here is the discussion order, etc when they know all along this is not happening and they cancel it two hours before it’s supposed to start…. This is insane, I’m sorry…

It’s do infuriating, such a waste of time and money not to mention all the great science proposed in these applications…. This is insane

Rich Lenski

I'm delighted that @relenski.bsky.social is the recipient of the 2025 Microbiology Society Prize Medal! When @evokait.bsky.social and I discussed evolutionary microbiologists to nominate, Rich was at the top of our lists — inspirational & foundational work in the field.

Congratulations Rich!
