The victim of today's ICE shooting in Minneapolis is the 5th person to be shot and killed by federal immigration agents since President Trump began his crackdown last year.
This is the 19th time they've opened fire.
We're tracking incidents here:
ICE agents in Minneapolis shot and killed a motorist, claiming she rammed her car into them. Video showed her backing up and driving away from the agents before they fired. Local officials rejected Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s assertion that the agents fired in self-defense. “The presence of federal immigration enforcement agents is causing chaos in our city,” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey subsequently posted on X.
The Trace has identified 14 shootings by federal immigration agents as of January 7.
They include the shootings of three people observing or documenting ICE raids.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic led to a spike in shootings, gun violence has been falling. Still, 2025 marked a milestone, with shooting deaths and injuries plummeting to some of their lowest levels on record.
As the Trump administration threatened to send federal troops in Chicago to fight crime, local leaders, including Governor Pritzker, responded by saying that not only is Trump not wanted, he’s flat out wrong: Chicago is experiencing a significant drop in gun violence.
Public health experts say framing gun violence solely as an “urban” issue ignores rising rates in rural communities, especially suicides, and risks sidelining proven solutions.

As people once again think about gun reforms in the wake of the Minneapolis Catholic school shooting, I hope you’ll read my latest story, which is based on gun industry documents and pubbed in partnership with @thetrace.org and @rollingstone.com

SCOOP: After Parkland, the gun industry found that people with “positive feelings” about gun ownership were open to common reform arguments.

Now, Gov. Abbott is faced with a choice: Expand the call and own the agenda of keeping records from the Uvalde incident secret, which is the Elephant In The Room driving the bill that everyone wants to avoid admitting.
President Donald Trump sent the National Guard and other feds to D.C. to combat what he claims is an out-of-control crime problem, and singled out five other cities where he said crime is “very bad”: Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Baltimore, and Oakland.
Violence is falling in all of these cities.
Historically, presidents have deployed the National Guard to desegregate schools and protect civil rights protesters — not to police street crime, experts say. There’s little, if any, research about using the guard for everyday policing, largely because that kind of deployment is unprecedented.
1/My primary concern as an investigative reporter is unearthing what the gun lobby/industry does not disclose to the public. In that regard, I consider my latest story for @thetrace.org and @rollingstone.com to be among the most significant I've ever published: www.thetrace.org/2025/07/gun-...
The Maryland Department of Health launched a dashboard that makes shooting data available to the public. It’s designed to withstand federal funding uncertainties.
After two Minnesota state lawmakers and their spouses were shot in their homes on June 14, social media was rife with false claims that the shooter was transgender. In fact, the suspect is a cisgender white man, reportedly a Trump supporter. But that didn’t stop the onslaught of misinformation.
The core of the country’s gun market is composed of white men, specifically repeat buyers. The gun industry knows this, and has tried to alter public perception — at the same time that it’s marketed Second Amendment extremism to its best customers.

President Donald Trump issued an executive order on February 7 in an apparent step toward fulfilling his campaign promises to roll back four years of gun reforms under his predecessor.
1/ Homicide leads among causes of death for pregnant and postpartum women. At the highest risk: Black and young women. Most of the deaths are attributed to firearms.
When I first read these data points, I was shocked, so I spent the next year reporting on it.

this seems to bother quite a few people but the answer is that i’m just yapping and i don’t feel the need to add punctuation or capitalization when it isn’t necessary for meaning
