One lap and then it starts again. On March 13, at 10:35 a.m., amidst the waves, Arthur (not his real name), a young officer in the French Navy, was out for a run, circling the deck of the ship where he worked. To record his performance
β a little over 7 kilometers covered in thirty-five minutes-he used the smartwatch on his wrist. The data collected was then uploaded to the internet.
Because Arthur has a profile on the sports app Strava, and it's "public": anyone can view it.
The young man has therefore just reported, almost live, the exact position in the Mediterranean Sea of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and its escort, northwest of Cyprus and about a hundred kilometers from the Turkish coast, as Le Monde has observed .
truly incredible that strava leaks are still happening after all this time

A rocky outcrop in the centre of the scene, with boulders and pebbles scattered around. In the distance, some gently rolling hills, and endless sand. All under a butterscotch sky.
You live in a time when you can see on your phone high-res photos taken over the weekend by a nuclear-powered rover on Mars.

A few days ago, I stood in the graveyard of an 1100 year old church, getting damper and damper in the drizzling rain.
A woman walked into the graveyard, waved, said hello, and, as we had previously arranged, handed me a paper bag full of human bones.
The life of a churchwarden is a strange one...

The rewilding movement needs to distance itself from bigots like Goldsmith.
There is no climate (and environmental) justice without social justice.
When these people show us who they are, we need to pay attention.

A picture is worth 1000 words...
This appeared on the BBC News today, showing the increase in solar electric generation in the UK.
Not sure who produced it, but genuinely think this is a genius piece of scientific communication - the construct and choice of colour scale is near-perfect.
Chapeau!

The HE Ballot failed, now what?
If youβre reading this it is because today the UCUβs 2025 national ballot over pay and conditions in universities has failed. The last timeβ¦
Unfortunately the HE 2025 ballot failed at 39% turnout. I have written about why and about what desperately needs to change in UCU's national structures off the back of this result. Some HEC members need to chi up and understand their role in all this, and how disconnected they are from members.

Heading into the Channel Tunnel today on train 9044 and celebrating a historic moment: on 1 December 1990, 35 years ago, French and British teams broke through and met under the sea for the first time. Thanks to their achievement, our Eurostar trains now cross the Channel in 20 minutes.

The experimental apparatus and the axial magnetic field profile. a Cross section of the central part of the ALPHA-2 experimental apparatus. In yellow and orange are shown the electrodes used to generate the electric fields for the Penning-Malmberg trap. The superconducting magnets that generate the magnetic-minimum trap (octupole and mirror coils) and boost the axial magnetic field to 3βT in the two side regions (left and right solenoids) are shown in blue and pink. The external, 1βT solenoid is not shown. Lasers for Be+ Doppler cooling can be injected along an off-axis path at 2.3 degrees through vacuum windows at either end of the apparatus (purple path), or along an on-axis path through a vacuum window onto movable 45-degree mirrors that can be positioned at either end of the central apparatus (cyan path). The orange electrodes in the left and right regions are azimuthally segmented to allow for the rotating wall (RW) technique (see text). The Be+ source (not shown) is placed on the same linear translator as the left side mirror20. Microchannel plate/phosphor assemblies used for imaging extracted particles (not shown) are placed on the same translators as the mirrors on both sides. The central portion of the drawing is to scale except for the annihilation detector, whose axial length is marked by purple bars. Position-sensitive detectors are used for stabilizing the cooling laser beams. b The corresponding longitudinal magnetic field (on-axis) that is maintained during Be+ assisted HΜ
accumulation.
In chemistry, we usually think in mols (~6E23), so 15,000 atoms sounds like nothing. But this is a breakthrough for antihydrogen generation; it's a huge jump in production scale and opens a lot of future research on antimatter.

Sympathetic cooling gives antihydrogen experiment a boost β Physics World
Having more antimatter could help solve profound mysteries of physics
Physicists working on the ALPHA experiment at CERN have trapped and accumulated 15,000 antihydrogen atoms in less than 7 h. This accumulation rate is more than 20 times the previous record. π§ͺβοΈ ow.ly/iKgP50XvMEC

Try Settings -> Notifications -> App Notifications -> Messages and then you should be able to set a sound for Incoming Messages.
If Samsung have their own messaging app then you would need to pick that instead, but there should still be a default notification category under that app you can edit.

Title slide from a presentation, with a river at sunset as the background. Title is "Tidal flow variation at a test site: instrumentation, physics, or both?"
Author: Thomas Lake, Ian Masters, Ali Esmaeili, Iestyn Evans, Deepak George, David Glasby, Jose M Horrillo-Carabello, Dawn Morgan, Michael Togneri, Alison J Williams
The Prifysgol Abertawe / Swansea University logo is in the corner
Presentation day for me at #EWTEC, showing some of the measurements taken at Warrior Way with different instruments over the last couple of years.
Almost certainly not as interesting as the title implies, but lets see what the audience thinks of it!
