Much like "social media victims" of today, distraught parents across the country repeatedly declared novels were the root cause of children taking their own lives.

Here in one clip from 1897 the cause of suicide was declared as reading "sentimental novels." The title: Novel Reading Causes Suicide

1906: "Books have become the modern narcotic." Novels were compared to opium, alcohol and cigarettes and parents wanted restrictions on children being able to read them.

Novels were compared to narcotics, and people pushing the moral panic wanted restrictions placed on who could purchase them. Reading was compared to gluttony and it was believed those who read novels were brain rotted, low IQ.

Books about jazz were blamed for making children depressed and causing suicide and brain rot ("lop-sided brains"), they wanted to ban children under 16 from reading them.

1908: the Lancet, one of the most respected scientific journals, calls for 18 age limit on reading in bed amidst a moral panic surrounding children becoming "addicted" to novels, which were "designed to keep kids hooked" and destroy their attention/mental health

I'm someone who was raised christian-conservative until I left home/graduated college in 2017. It was 100% repeated exposure to the truth that turned me humanist-leftist. In fact, religious/political institutions are banking on controlling the narrative when you're young to make truth access harder.

I'm working within character limits here, so it's difficult to address every bad thing that came out concisely. However, I think if the people owned it, if the people regulated it, AI could look much different.

I listened to the free part, and let me tell you, as someone on the left who studies AI, I think the left is fair to criticize what corporations are doing with it, but it's also CRUCIAL for people to understand what it actually is, instead of simply looking at AI Slop and saying "ban the tool."
