“You know what the risk is? … That people will stop being afraid, and they’re being squeezed into a coiled spring, and that one day that coiled spring will shoot out.”
Yes come watch me make my best attempt at being articulate at the crack of dawn
I must still be zonked because I wrote my newsletter yesterday and then didn’t actually schedule it to send…
This week: The ministers' defamation suit against Bloomberg, Jolovan Wham goes on trial, and Singapore's response to war.

There’s a protest against US imperialism here in Singapore today and the police are saying there shouldn’t be any symbols/issues related to Israel or Palestine at it 🙄🙄🙄

Ironically it was reported that the dead guy didn't want him. The attack almost certainly led to deeper extremism as opposed to less.
This deal manages to be both an abject defeat of the United States and batshit insane all at once.
This is the first time we’re trying to do something like this, a way to open up space for discussion with our writers and wrap up our February 2026 issue shortly before our May 2026 issue lands.
Come join us!
I'll be joining a panel organised by @adimagazine.bsky.social to talk about confronting censorship in May! More details here: www.eventbrite.com/e/confrontin...
It’s also just antithetical to journalism and honestly if I were Mackenyu’s agent/publicist/PR team I’d blacklist the magazine for this
They try to frame it as providing food for thought—“Are these the words we expect from Mackenyu? Or are they just replies from an echo chamber of celebrity-hood that we want to believe is from him?”—but it’s really just a cop-out for the fact that they’d banked on a feature with no back-up.
Esquire Singapore wanted to interview Mackenyu, but it didn’t work out. So they fed his previous interviews into AI and generated one for themselves.
The first question is about *checks notes* boundaries
This week’s newsletter: More executions, more money that Terry Xu and The Online Citizen have to cough up, and thoughts on heat stress.

I have no idea what to do with this knowledge now

Nathalie Chi on the scapegoating of bamboo scaffolding in Hong Kong's Tai Po fire, and how international media outlets that adopted that framing were letting the authorities off the hook too easily: mekongreview.com/cultural-mis...
I have finally read Red, White & Royal Blue and it was a catharsis I didn't know I needed, yes yes Trump didn't win the 2016 election (or any election) and let's tell the homophobic royals to shut the fuck up
There aren't going to be enough lasers and strobe lighting in the world for this
This song is actually an ad for Bioré sunscreen. It has no business being so good and turning into one of my top comfort songs

They're going to have to figure something out about the voting system because I can see Asians taking it very fucking seriously and it might end in tears

This is one of the stickers from a legit sticker sheet given out to Singaporean households to remind people to make sure they aren’t inadvertently providing spots for dengue mosquitos to breed
