People really memory holed-covid, due to a huge far right propaganda effort. That's why all you hear about is lockdowns, and not:

- hospitals out of capacity
- Skype calls with family members in quarantine as they died
- bodies stored in freezer trailors
- mass graves in NYC

The reviews searched over 12,000 references. They screened 547 full-text papers for inclusion. They included 17. That's a 96.9% exclusion rate at full text. 530 studies were relevant enough to survive initial screening, then rejected by the review criteria. 6/10 reviews found 0 included studies.

Reeves reaffirms commitment to end windfall tax in talks with North Sea bosses The Chancellor met figures from BP, TotalEnergies and Serica in Downing Street.

I'm dismayed by rumours govt may scrap the windfall tax on oil and gas giants

With energy bills still driving cost of living pressures, it's senseless to cut taxes for highly profitable polluters, who already receive ÂŁ2.7bn per year in tax breaks

The boys’ club: How Epstein’s influence shaped the exclusion of women in STEM In one email, an AI researcher suggested it’s “hard to be brilliant if you are worrying if you look fat or why another woman hates you.”

“The women are all weak, and a distraction sorry.” - Epstein in email about women attending a scientific conference.

“…no really smart women – none.” - Epstein in email about women in science.

🇨🇺 February 13 | The UN Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) expressed extreme worry over the “deepening socio-economic crisis” in Cuba, highlighting several key issues:

▪️ With over 80% of water pumping on the island dependent on electricity, power cuts are undermining access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene.

▪️ Decades-long U.S. embargo and recent oil shipment restrictions are responsible for compounding economic strain.

▪️ Fuel shortages are also jeopardizing hospitals, including ICUs and emergency rooms, and disrupting the storage and delivery of vaccines and other temperature-sensitive medicines.

▪️ The rationing system and basic food basket have been disrupted, affecting school meals, maternity homes, nursing homes, and other social protections.

▪️ Vulnerable groups are being hit hardest.

▪️ Electricity cuts are also limiting communications and access to information.

👉 OHCHR urged all states to lift unilateral sectoral measures, saying policy goals cannot justify actions that violate human rights.

So, if you ever wondered why people who understand surveillance are salty about video cameras on doorbells...

It's only a matter of time before they get co-opted into mass surveillance. And if the regime you live under changes that's you spying on your neighbours.

Trump moves to dismantle major US climate research center in Colorado The Trump administration is breaking up the National Center for Atmospheric Research, taking aim at one of the world's leading climate research labs.

NCAR is quite literally our global mothership.

Everyone who works in climate and weather has passed through its doors and benefited from its incredible resources.

Dismantling NCAR is like taking a sledgehammer to the keystone holding up our scientific understanding of the planet.

Unbelievable.

I'm deeply concerned about the wellbeing of prisoners who were involved in Palestine Action protests, and are currently on hunger strike.

Some have not eaten for six weeks. A number have been hospitalised. They are all being held on remand - without trial or conviction.

Learning Enhanced Ensemble Filters The filtering distribution in hidden Markov models evolves according to the law of a mean-field model in state-observation space. The ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) approximates this mean-field model w...

Diagram showing the improved performance of the enhanced ensemble filter compared to leading filtering methods.

We use a set transformer, a neural network architecture that is invariant to permutations of the ensemble, and can be learned at one ensemble size and deployed at another. This method shows significant improvement over leading filtering methods across a range of ensemble sizes and dynamical systems.

Ensemble Kalman filters (EnKFs) are suboptimal in the nonlinear and finite-ensemble setting. In this work, we learn corrections to the EnKF to improve filtering performance, approximating the mean-field formulation of the filtering problem.

If I were deliberately trying to cause vulnerable refugees as much distress as possible, this is how I would do it. Constantly shifting the ground underneath them, never allowing them a moment of certainty and stability. This is barbarism.

UK set to limit refugees to temporary stays Shabana Mahmood is expected to say the era of permanent protection for refugees is over, in major changes to the UK's asylum and immigration system.

This is utterly foul. People recognised as refugees will never able to settle and find the long-term security they need to recover, always at risk of being returned if they can’t prove they still *really* deserve to be here. A life lived in permanent limbo.

Bootstrap distributions of different estimators of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with synthetic data, showing distributional shift between normal and anomalous SNRs.

Bootstrap distributions of different estimators of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with synthetic data, showing distributional shift between normal and anomalous SNRs.

In synthetic experiments with prescribed signal-to-noise ratios, we find that new scoring rule–based estimators agree with the classical ones on whether the signal-to-noise ratio is anomalous or not. In application to the North Atlantic Oscillation, the results are more equivocal. (3/3)

This information-theoretic framework provides a new interpretation of the signal-to-noise paradox in climate forecasting, and could lead to more robust statistical tests for it. Additionally, it allows for the definition of a signal-to-noise ratio for categorical forecasts. (2/3)

We escaped war and torture but now we feel unsafe in Britain Special report: Amid protests and rising aggression towards asylum seekers across the country, we spoke to those being targeted

I’ve been frustrated to see so much of the ongoing story about asylum seekers and the protests against them covered without hearing from those seeking asylum and now being met with hostility and hatred

I set out to speak to those directly affected to find out about the impact this is having 👇

Officials say 85 Palestinians seeking aid are killed in Gaza as Israel widens evacuation orders Gaza’s Health Ministry says at least 85 Palestinians have been killed while trying to reach food on the deadliest day yet for aid-seekers in over 21 months of war

Deliberately starving people and shooting them when they seek aid is an industrial and systemic approach to mass murder.

In #Gaza, people are starving.

Families are going without substantial meals for days.
Prices have increased by over 4000%.
The Israeli Authorities have banned UNRWA from bringing food into Gaza for over 4 months.

This is a manmade and politically motivated starvation of a people.

Lift the siege.
