This should be the most basic starting point for thinking about political economy. Everyone needs to read Istvan Hont, John Shovlin, Walter Scheidel, David Stasavage, and Thomas Oatley and catch up

A cool thing about the original photo they used for the end of the shining is that the guy they replaced with Jack Nicholson also appears to be a cursed caretaker

Between the Atlanta Fed GDP-nowcasting negative and Lutnick & Elon proposing we remove the ‘G’ from ‘C+I+G+NX’ it’s never been a better time for @adamtooze.bsky.social to promote his first book.

It’s going to be fun watching Republicans say inflation is good now.

In light of a million discussions about populism, throwback to the Nye Committee, which encouraged the idea that US entry to WWI was caused by a conspiracy of bankers and munitions makers (with heavy anti-UK and antisemitic insinuations). This fueled the isolationists during WWII.

They should make a Death of Stalin type movie about the death of Mao but instead of british actors it should be american actors and a Nixon looking actor should play Mao. No i will not be explaining

In his 1845 speech "The True Grandeur of Nations," future Senator Charles Sumner, anticipating war with Mexico, declared that the statement of "an officer of our Navy" (Commodore Stephen Decatur) "our country, be she right or wrong" was "a sentiment dethroning God, and enthroning the devil."

I love that we are literally minting an oligarch class with a “strategic reserve” for an asset that has no intrinsic value.

The funny thing about B’sky is that a bunch of the same people who have concluded Harris struggled because she didn’t go on Rogan or other town squares that are reaching new audiences have also decided to join a new silo because they don’t like what’s happened to the town square.

There’s something sterile about BlueSky in that it’s way too easy to restart here and not be the least bit aware of what’s going on with Israel-Palestine, for instance. There’s a daycare quality to it.

I think BlueSky is objectively a better scrolling and social media experience than X. It’s not gamified to hell, and it presents external articles/writing better. However X still has a critical mass of info for adept older users.

Really informative interview.

-The Mao era roots of certain capitalist institutions
- Why Mao never fully trusted the party’s Left faction.
- The role of the Sino-Soviet split in China’s eventual US economic turn.

Truly a tailor made episode for certain China watchers.

the immense government corruption in the sonic the hedgehog setting has created a vicious cycle of shady private firms with links to GUN officials being given state contracts to build enormous obstacle courses of loop-de-loops and floating roads, to no clear purpose
