DeepDay is just around the corner! ✨
This year’s theme -United to Defend the Deep- will shine a light on the power of global unity, bring together voices from across society, and elevate those taking action to protect the deep sea. ✊
Make sure you seize the day and show the deep sea some love 🩵

Only a tiny fraction of the deep sea has been explored, and existing data are heavily biased.
@oceandiscleague.bsky.social proposes observing 10,000 locations worldwide to create a more balanced and representative understanding of deep-sea ecosystems.
Growing up to 40 meters, the giant siphonophore can be longer than a blue whale, despite being as skinny as a broomstick.
They live 700—1000 meters below the ocean surface and are colonial organisms made up of many hydrozoans.

The latest session of the International Seabed Authority ended without approval for deep-sea mining, but the debate continues.
What is unilateral mining?
What is the CCZ?
What does “common heritage of humankind” mean?

New reports expose the reality of deep-sea mining:
⚠️ Contractor breaches
💸 €24T in finance pulling back
🌍 Not needed for clean energy
⚖️ No fair benefits
📉 Likely not profitable
Risky. Unnecessary. Not worth it.
We need a moratorium.

Deep-sea fish larvae break the rules of vision. Instead of typical eye development, they use “hybrid” photoreceptors – rod-like cells with cone biology – helping them see in dim light from early life stages. 👁️👁️
Underwater scene showcasing diverse coral species and marine life, with the title "Deep Sea Wonders: The biodiversity of seamounts." The logo of Deep Sea Conservation Coalition is displayed.
Seamounts are hotspots of biodiversity.
Sessile animals such as corals cling to their rocky surfaces, while upwellings lead to growths of phytoplankton, attracting fish and migratory animals such as whales, sharks and dolphins.

2/3 Governments, including France, Costa Rica, South Africa on behalf of the Africa Group, Mexico, Germany, Palau, and Brazil, among others, raised major scientific, environmental, and governance gaps. Several States stressed that these issues must be fully resolved before any mining is considered.
1/3 The International Seabed Authority Council ends without a Mining Code amid industry compliance concerns.
Unresolved issues ranged from environmental safeguards and liability to inspection, compliance, and benefit-sharing.
The image shows a large offshore drilling vessel belonging to Allseas, positioned in the ocean under clear blue skies. Prominent text on the left reads, "What is unilateral deep-sea mining?" The logo of the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition appears at the top.
Unilateral deep-sea mining threatens international law and would open the global seabed to a dangerous free-for-all.
The ocean floor is our common heritage — not a resource for a few companies to exploit.

A world map highlighting seamount regions: North Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Mediterranean Seamounts, and South Indian Ridge. Various marine species are illustrated, including fish, turtles, and whales. The map details threats from destructive fishing and emphasizes the significance of seamount protection to support migratory species. Color-coded icons indicate fishing methods: netting, trawling, and longlining, with associated impacts. Graphical statistics present species numbers and conservation status per region. Additional textual information highlights the importance of seamounts to marine biodiversity.

An octopus swims in deep water. Text above reads: "Why we need a global moratorium on deep-sea mining.
Scientific evidence shows deep-sea mining would cause permanent damage to vital ecosystems for short-term corporate profit.
A moratorium is essential to prevent irreversible harm and protect our shared common heritage.
