Agency and Consent: The impact of Generative AI in Academia – Digital is People

“…why would we assume that use of these tools is the same thing as consenting to the full implications of saying yes?

Are academics saying yes because they have to?”

“‘Newsrooms should stand by their journalists . . . These campaigns are disproportionately deployed against women and against people of colour, and that means that those are the people who will be disproportionately taken off of the airwaves when newsrooms give in to these bad faith campaigns.’”

U.S. government is asking Canadian researchers whether their work deals with DEI, climate, gender Questions to grant recipients infringe on academic independence, Canadian faculty group says

Completely bonkers that US government is now targeting Canadian researchers working on climate & beyond. Canadian government should step up with funding.

To be clear climate is about national security, public safety, trade & jobs. innovation etc.

I decided to start a #thread 🧵 of stories about legal residents and tourists being (illegally) arrested, detained and/or deported by the Trump regime. I'll only post stories from serious sources, as rumors and conspiracies are really not needed in this authoritarian moment.

Amazon just unveiled Alexa+, its new voice assistant. Here's what to expect Amazon introduced its Alexa+, with some features powered by AI. It can help with texts, party invites, and even reading tones of voice.

There’s a parallel track of tech barons becoming more comfortable w/being openly fascist while their companies push devices that are more and more invasive, and I don’t think it ends with people happily installing these things in their homes, and wearing them on their faces.

“…hope is not a guarantee of success, but the insistence that working for justice is meaningful in and of itself.”

I think there’s a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ in terms of finding collaborators with whom you gel with. But balancing the demands of work with care for each other as human beings is important. Also, a commitment from everyone to be very organized (which to me is another form of care)!

We Aren't Being Told the Real Extent of AI Datacenter Emissions The emissions produced by AI datacenters is likely far worse than believed because of how companies report their sustainability data.

“The already formidable environmental toll of generative AI is even worse than it seems because businesses aren't being transparent about the emissions given off by their enormous new AI datacenters.”
