Great @ricepolisci.bsky.social dissertation defense for @connerjoyce.bsky.social! He's off to @iepolisci.bsky.social as an assistant professor. Excellent work addressing nonstate actor engagement in political cyber attacks and the potential for international cooperation to control this. So proud!

@tongfi-kim.bsky.social For inclusion in ATOP an agreement must be signed by at least two independent states. We do not include unilateral guarantees. So we now wait to see if a bilateral agreement follows. Of course ours is only one possible operational definition of “alliance”.
Bob Stein cared deeply about making sure that the work he valued so much continues. He and his family established the Robert M. (Bob) Stein Fund for Social Policy Research to support programs integrating teaching with research and community impact. To contribute: riceconnect.rice.edu/donation/ste...
@ricepolisci.bsky.social lost a giant last week. I was lucky enough to work with Bob for 24 years. His deep belief in the power of research to make better policy, and his commitment to involve students in community engaged research will inspire me forever. news.rice.edu/news/2025/ri...

Michelle, this means so much to me. ❤️❤️❤️
Today is my last day as Chair of the Department of Political Science at Rice University. Academic leadership is about helping good people do good things. It has been my honor and privilege to support our faculty and students over the last ten years. Welcome to Guillermo Rosas who starts tomorrow!
So proud of these students! The next phases of their careers take them to Arizona State University, Wesleyan University, San Diego State University, Universidad de los Andes, and Russell Reynolds.
Erik has had an amazing research impact already, and he is just getting started. I am so honored to work with this remarkable scholar and mentor.
It's wonderful to see our amazing faculty recognized for the investment they make in our students. Libby makes such a difference in providing our students with opportunities to do community engaged research and learning and guiding them through the process.
This is a very well deserved award. Congratulations, Randy!
How should scholars of international politics think about the future of IR in the midst of important shifts in global politics?
We're seeking submissions -- limited to 4,000 words -- for a special section on the future of IR, due June 15, 2025.
Please share!

I’m so sorry. This is terribly sad.
I gave! I hope @ricepolisci.bsky.social Ph.D. alums will help pay it forward by supporting the current students. The association is extremely well organized and managed, and they are using the funds in very positive ways.
Great to see this out! This review is important for IR scholars as well— under what conditions do women lead and what are the implications of that leadership? Highly recommend!
Know anyone who works on public law, Constitutional law, or political thought and is interested in a career focused on teaching, curriculum development, and advising? @ricepolisci.bsky.social is hiring-- this is a career, promotable track with a focus on teaching and service.
I highly recommend this new JCR article by @ricepolisci.bsky.social Ph.D. student @connerjoyce.bsky.social. It uses a creative empirical strategy to evaluate whether states can control non-state hackers operating from their territory if incentivized to do so-- key to international cooperation.
Women in Conflict Studies will be hosting a reception on Sunday night at the upcoming ISA meeting. Further information is in the ISA conference program. I hope to see many of my WICS colleagues there!

New article with Jesse Johnson and Burcu Savun published online at ISQ. The article advances our understanding of how governments use international security policy to maintain power domestically and how alliances impact civil wars. academic.oup.com/isq/article-...
Thanks to @goodauth.bsky.social for inviting me to write an explainer about U.S. alliances. The whole series is a great resource for syllabi!
