Garden Hack - Roofing Shingles - Flowerwise Garden Studio Three ways I've used recycled roof shingles in the garden and why it's one of my favorite garden hacks

🌱 One of my favorite gardening hacks, using repurposed old roof shingles to create curved beds and pathways. See the three projects that I’ve used it for so far, with photos. Highly recommended way to divert shingles from the landfill for a second purpose!

I know it’s temporary but here in upstate NY it’s going be in the high 60s for two days with blue skies. It’s melting all the snow. The birds are singing. It’s as wonderful as escaping to a warmer climate for a few days in March just when I can’t take it any more.

Bird Cage Planter - Ideas for a Double Decker - Flowerwise Garden Studio How I planted a bird cage planter — including a double decker method I couldn't find anywhere else, the two plants I chose, and why.

Bought a $5 flea market bird cage. Ran into a sizing problem. Accidentally invented a double-decker planting setup I couldn't find documented anywhere else.

Turtle vine + tradescantia + a glue gun drainage trick. Full breakdown on the blog!

The Flowerwise Field Guide to Your First Flower Garden

Most beginner flower #gardening advice assumes you already know what you’re doing (at least a little bit!)

I wrote a step-by-step guide for people who don’t.

How to plant your first flower garden, for people who are brand new to planting a garden: flowerwisegarden.com/first-flower-garden-bsky

Young white tailed deer on the front porch of my house looking at the camera

Throwback to Valentine’s day 2019 when a neighbor sent me this photo of my front porch. Best Valentine ever! But when I say the deer around here are bold, this is why.

As an #embroidery artist I complete 10-12 pieces/yr. After 2 years, I had a bag of short threads and had this idea. It has taken probably 60+ hours but I finished and framed it today. The “threads in the web of life” concept is a core aspect of my beliefs and as a gardener I love how it came out! 🌱

I think it’s time to take the “amateur obvs” off your profile. Even if you don’t sell your photography, you’re beyond amateur.

Callisia Repens or Turtle Vine - latest addition to the indoor gardening

Yesterday, I went out to buy some ice melt and also came home with this Turtle Vine “Pink Panther.” I’m working on a bird cage planting project, and I can’t wait to show you!

I have a few and they really were delightful last spring. Mine aren’t out yet - there is still a foot of snow! But how big do the plants get, do you know?

Let’s talk winter resilience, gardeners! I’m just so ☀️ powered, I may even be a plant 🌱 I’m working on 2 articles about how I survive the dark: 1, a frigid day spent immersed in what fires up inner sunshine and 2, the process of creating a bird cage planting. Follow me to read both when available!

Just wow. The sun melted some of the snow today, creating these spectacular icicles. I just took photos of the frozen garden with the full moon behind the ice from the second floor.

Picked up a bouquet of fresh flowers as I do every January 29th, to celebrate closing on my first home in 2014. Happy anniversary to my house and forever gardens 💜

Nothing better than having a flower grow indoors when it’s -9° outdoors.

Snowing like crazy here and we are forecasted from 1-2 feet while it’s 5 degrees outside. Scrolling through flowers helps!

Finished my lavender on felt mandala hand embroidery with a hand painted frame yesterday. 💜 It was going in my store but I painted it with leftover trim paint from my bedroom and now it looks so good in there I’m keeping it. Where there’s a wall, there’s a way! 😆 #embroidery #fiberarts

I almost can’t believe this is real. With all the incredulous AI flower content flying around online (bright blue dahlias!) I first thought it had to be fake but then I saw who was posting it, and the trademarked name! This might be the most extraordinary rose I’ve ever seen.

This IS how you germinate seeds, right? 😊 I just went through all the packets of vegetable, herb and flower seeds and started plotting my approach. I think I will start seeds that can be started inside earlier this year.

Memories of warmer days. Baptisia is short lived but the foliage is cool and makes a nice shrub the rest of the year if supported and pruned.
