The best chance that the US has for adopting the metric system is by convincing people that the price of gas is lower by pricing it in $ per liter.

Really interesting mix of reactions to this in the replies and quotes

* Sympathy for this kid
* Suggestion they change majors and teach themselves to code
* The ick: bro coder edition
* They’ll be the most employable CS grad in about 5 years
* Is education about mastery or employability in a trade?

I’ll ask if that can be arranged! I don’t know how far in advance those selections are made.

I can’t overstate how intimidating it is to try to fill the shoes of the prior writers of MPR. I’m fortunate to have the counsel of some retired staff to review my work before publication.

Still, reading through the archives is always educational, and it inspires me to do more.

I've had a stress headache for like... three weeks straight, and it's not fun!

I'm lobbying for another full time seat for Microprocessor Report, I could use the help. 😅

That said, fun news coming from me next week.

An artistic representation of the internals of the Nintendo Switch 2.

For Microprocessor Report, I'm looking at NVIDIA's T239 SoC found in the Nintendo Switch 2, and how it stacks up against competing SoCs from AMD, as well as the prospect of Intel producing a Panther Lake SoC for gaming handhelds.

It's a store shelf, in Japan, of power strips that are just continuous lines, not individual plugs.

Instead of an April Fool's Day joke, here's an old post from the past that I'm dusting off:

Fantastic gift idea to make the electrical engineers, IT people, and other nerd or nerd-adjacent people in your life visibly uncomfortable: the seamless power strip!

I see some people are frustrated by how strident the anti-AI sentiment has gotten on here but whose fault is that, do you think

I can't overstate how big of a deal it is that @geekwire.com has Mary Jo Foley as a columnist now. Great work, @toddbishop.bsky.social.

By 2028 you won’t be able to find a single mention of Donald Trump at CPAC anywhere. Mark it.

It’s really funny that in 2026, I have a milkman.

This isn’t a commentary on Instacart, I seriously get milk and eggs delivered to my doorstep at like 5 AM every Tuesday.

It’s great service and great quality, it’s just conceptually interesting that this is still a thing.

Worse still, I put dashes in things, so my drafts are like “2026-04_-_AMD_9950X3D2_JS0.docx”

This is largely by design. If we stop thinking about AI as simply technology and instead as part of a political and economic program, its chief function become easier to see: namely to erode interpersonal trust so that ultimately we give up on forms of agreement & negotiation arbitrated by people.

The NYT quotes a young conservative operative without identifying him as such.

On the left, the NYT quotes him wondering why anyone would think Trump is different from any other president. And then on the right, is that kid's Substack insisting that Trump is different from any other president.

I suspect someone’s going to pirate it and put together a punch-up dub (think “Bad Lip Reading” crossed with “Yu-Gi-Oh! abridged”) explicitly to make fun of JKR.

Casual observation: in macOS 26.4, powermetrics now reports the secondary ("performance") cores as P0-Cluster and P1-Cluster instead of M0- and M1- (at launch). The "super" cores are now S-Cluster, instead of "P-Cluster".

It'll be interesting to see how the incumbent manufacturers find a new route to market.

If this is indeed how Mochizuki or his source got the numbers, it’s not just shoddy but enters the territory of market manipulation.

P.S.: FTC’s Feb revenue decreased every year bc of Lunar New Year (across Jan-Feb in 2025). It’s dubious to interpret that as an indicator of production cuts.

As someone who doesn’t really play in the kubernetes ecosystem, it’s encouraging to see this much organic interest in platforms and orchestration when it feels as if everything has reoriented toward AI.

and I’m sure that’s a focus, but it’s not *the* focus.
