Books should take forever to write. They should torture you your entire life and the things you could have said slightly better should haunt you forever. This is what art is for, transferring the discomfort of being human into something relatable to the other humans

A flyer for Speculative Fiction Intensive with Ruth Joffre. Online, all levels, 16 sessions, Tue. January 27 - May 26, 5 - 7 PM (Pacific) or 7 - 9 PM (Central). Under the details, there's an image of a floating island with a waterfall spilling over the edge.
starting in three weeks! a semester-length online class for emerging speculative fiction writers in search of structure, support, and accountability. I've taught this class before and it was a blast, so I'm excited to offer it again. register here: hugohouse.org/product/spec...
I hear there are a lot of new people here this week. Here are some flash fiction writers for you to follow, if that's your kind of thing!

Welcome to the neighborhood!
My heart 😭. Loved this, congrats on the pub!
Departures by Dina L. Relles handed you the promised coffee with an apology: no sugar, no milk, I’m sorry. I don’t need those things, you said, and I fell in impossible love with you all over again. I’d come from my room carrying everything I wanted to happen that didn’t. Now the lobby was too bright and smelled like grapefruits and your face was weary in a way that felt intimate. You spoke quietly to me in the taxi, then held me twice at the terminal, which I took to mean you loved me too, despite.
it’s been a minute since i’ve published anything, so i’m especially grateful that @matchbooklitmag.bsky.social gave this little musing on love + leavings a home.

I absolutely love this story by @ambersparks.bsky.social Recently, I saw a very grumpy call for submissions that listed all the things they did NOT want to see in their queue and this story fits a couple of those. Be open to brilliance and innovation, editors, and you will be rewarded.

Lauren Morrow’s debut novel “Little Movements” explores being a Black artist in a space not built with you in mind, and the toll of constantly having to prove your value. (@cherrylousy.bsky.social)

That’s high praise as far as I’m concerned! 😂
You too! And congratulations on the pub!
Love this 💕
At the top of the page is a drawing of a pile of skulls. Underneath is today’s date: August 7, 2025. Then the title of the story and the name of the author: Maybe Someday by Anna Vangala Jones. Below that is the text of the opening lines of the story: “They meet every Tuesday around 3pm at the same green bench in front of the train station. It’s crowded enough where they go unnoticed and loud enough near the tracks with trains coming and going where they go unheard. They could be two strangers just happening upon the same bench instead of two would be lovers arranging to meet exactly there.”
I have a new story in @havehashad.com today! so grateful as always to wonderful editor @aaronburch.bsky.social + all of you who read this one 🤍💀 www.havehashad.com/hadposts/may...

Haven’t written anything in days but did get my hair done and have been keeping a toddler alive and I think that has to count for something
10/10, flawless, no notes 😂
Me 😭
That sounds very luxurious 🥰
I made a little clay wash and I’m using the last of my Melanin hair care products. How about you?
I just took down my goddess braids which is where the exasperation is really coming from lol. I’m getting them redone this weekend at a full-service salon (glory be) so I don’t actually have to wash/deep condition/detangle but I want to anyway, just for the ritual of it.
Same here and I’m dreading it 😂 But also very excited to reread this 💕
