...after April 20th the airport still averages another 8cm of new snowfall.
We're getting closer to the end, but the only recent years which were done by now were 2025, 2023 & 2012.
A lot of years wait until May, like 2024, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2015, 2014...

...Blatchford got down to 0cm of snowdepth on April 20th. That basically ties late years like 2020, 2018 & 2011.
Although the airport & Stony Plain had been at 0cm earlier on the 9th, and then again around the 17th.
Elk Island is still up at at 20cm.

April 20th's High of 22.7°C was the 5th warmest on record, and our warmest day since 23.2°C on October 10th.
The Low of 2.9°C was a pretty unremarkable 43rd.

So April 20th is our first 20⁰C day of 2026, and our warmest day since October 10th.
It's fairly typical for these to start popping up in Mid-April (although the forecast High of 3⁰C later this week is also fairly typical).

...in April on average we have 2 Highs reach 20°C.
Most years get at least one, but a few recent ones that missed it were 2024, 2017, 2012, 2011, 2007...
And on the other hand 2018, 2016, 2015 & 2001 all got to 25°C in April.

April 19th's High of 19.2°C didn't quite give us our first 20°C of the year, but it was our warmest day since October 10th.

I dunno.
Burying the 7 day forecast behind a few extra clicks seems like a bad idea to me.
Maybe it's just an Edmonton thing? But I'm usually much more interested in the next few days, than in the next few hours.

Environment Canada is doing a betatest of a new layout of their forecasts, and they've got an example for Edmonton:

...in Edmonton the path from winter to summer is not linear, and most years have lots of ups and downs.
We don't really do "average".
We can be 10°C in January, -20°C in March, 30°C in May, and 5°C in June.

1948's average High & Low were -2.7°C & -12.4°C.
1935's were -2.3°C & -13.2°C.
(those are all about 5°C colder than this year)

...recently, the covid spring of 2020 started a lot colder, as did 2018.
2020's average High of 0.7°C and Low of -8.9°C both ranked as 138th out of 147.
2018's High of 0.4°C was 139th, and Low of -8.3°C was 130th.

Spring started 4 weeks ago (...wait, that can't be right?)
Has this been the coldest spring ever? #yegwx #yeg
Usurpingly, no.
It definitely hasn't been warm, but the average High of 3°C is our 126th warmest out of 147. The average Low of -6°C is 105th warmest...

...however, both cities often have snow continuing into May.
By this point of the year Edmonton was done with snow in 2025, 2023, 2018 & 2012.
For Calgary 2020, 2018 & 2016 were the recent years with no snow after April 16th.

...for Edmonton, with 130cm of snow so far we're a bit above average, mostly thanks to the extremely snowy December.
Calgary was well below average for most of the winter, but a big March & April have pushed them up to 141cm, and right around average.

April 16th was cold. #yegwx #yeg
Its High of -0.5°C was our 5th coldest on record, and Low of -8.2°C was 6th coldest.
That made it our coldest April 16th since 1989, although 2002 was close.
The average High for mid-April is 10°C, and Low is -1°C.

That brought them to 24cm for April, which is just above their average.

...these temperatures are nowhere near record-cold, but they are around bottom-10.
April 16th's Low of -8.2°C will be its 6th coldest on record.
The average Low right now is around -1°C, and average High is 10°C.

...and why is this April so cold?
Well, unfortunately our temperatures have mostly been really close to average.
But that also means our temperatures have been colder than they were during the January & February heatwaves.

...near downtown we ended up with just a dusting of snow overnight.
Blatchford had been sitting at 1cm of snowdepth for a few days, while the Airport & Stony Plain had been at 0cm since the 9th.
At this point of the year new snow doesn't tend to hang around long.

...this is the Calgary station for 1885-2012.
The records make it look like it was at their airport the whole time.
But it was definitely somewhere else prior to the 50s.

I don't know how EC officially handles moves.
Blatchford had two stations for a few years in the 90s.
And in the 30s we had 1 at Blatchford and 1 downtown.
Calgary had a station with records from 1885-2012, even though it definitely moved to the airport in the 50s.

I'm not involved with Environment Canada, so I have no idea.
But its snowfall readings stopped in 2007.
And its snowdepth took a break from 2012-2015, and then again from 2021-2024.
I was surprised when the snowdepth measurements started up again this winter, because I figured those were finished.
