How the rest of the world sees the USA

The mass emigration of around 25 million people lasted from the founding of the Italian state in 1861 until the economic boom of the 1960s, known as the miracolo economico (economic miracle). The term „Italian diaspora“ is also used for this, especially in English-speaking countries

The main reason for emigration was widespread poverty, especially among the rural population. Until the 1950s, parts of Italy remained a rural, agrarian and pre-modern society, especially in the north-east and south, where agricultural conditions were not conducive to keeping farmers in the country

Another reason was overpopulation, particularly in southern Italy (Mezzogiorno). After the Risorgimento, the founding of an Italian nation state in 1861, southern Italians had access to running water and medical care in hospitals for the first time. This reduced infant mortality and, together with the highest birth rate in Europe for a long time, led to an increase in the population, which in turn forced many young southern Italians to emigrate at the beginning of the 20th century

After the Second World War, another wave of emigration set in, as the booming economies of Western and Central Europe needed workers. Of the 4 million Italians who came to West Germany as „guest workers“ from 1955 as a result of the recruitment agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and Italy, 89 percent returned to Italy. Italy’s economic upturn and the structural shift away from agriculture ultimately largely put an end to emigration

South America a land of blessings.

Home of the Andes, where peaks touch the heavens. A land where the Amazon breathes life. Soil fertile to promise abundance. A land where nature's wonders align.
