Trans in the City Changemakers List 2026 - Shaan Knan
Photo of Mary, Octavian and Shaan in front of Trans In The City Changemakers sign at the TITC event.
Their work reflects the steady, often unseen effort that drives real change, through research, advocacy, and lived experience.
Thank you to Trans in the City for creating space to celebrate this work, and to Mary, Octavian and Shaan for everything they contribute 💙 🦋
A special evening at the Trans in the City Trans Day of Visibility event 2026 celebrating trans changemakers across the UK.
We’re proud that GIRES trustees Mary Deans, Octavian Starr and Shaan Knan were recognised.
Without it, visibility would be shallow and easily distorted.
With it, there is something more solid to point to - visible evidence that holds up under scrutiny.
We are grateful to everyone who has contributed to building that foundation over the years.

That work has shaped how trans+ lives are understood.
It has provided evidence where there was previously assumption or silence.
It has supported the case for appropriate services and informed evidence-led approaches to trans+ healthcare, education, and policy making.
We want to recognise the trans+ researchers, academics, professionals and community members who have contributed to this work.
Not only those whose work is published, but also those who have undertaken their own projects, often without funding or recognition, simply because the work needed to exist
It includes long-term data collection, detailed qualitative accounts, and careful analysis needed to make sense of both. It includes documenting trans+ lives historically as well as in the present, creating a record that would otherwise be lost or ignored. Important research has even been destroyed.
Much of this work sits within academic institutions dotted around the world.
Some of it is peer-reviewed, some has been done independently, by people who saw gaps in understanding and set out to fill them.
Much of it has been done voluntarily.

Since 1997, GIRES has worked alongside trans+ people doing the work that most people never see.
Over the years, that has meant building up a body of evidence about trans+ lives, not in theory, but through data, research, and first-hand accounts gathered and recorded over time.

Equality is not conditional and human rights frameworks exist to safeguard those most at risk of exclusion.
On #HumanRightsDay, GIRES stands with trans and gender-diverse people across the UK and beyond. Protecting their rights strengthens human rights for all.
#TransRightsAreHumanRights
👉 Human rights do not change because someone is trans or gender diverse.
The phrase "trans rights are human rights" matters because it recentres the conversation on what is truly at stake. It pushes back against attempts to treat trans people as an exception to the rules that protect everyone else
TRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS #HumanRightsDay GIRES logo
Trans rights are human rights. This principle is central to international human rights law. Yet it is increasingly contested in debate.
Every person has the right to safety, dignity, privacy, family life, healthcare, education, and participation in society without discrimination.

GIRES Statement on the Exclusion of Trans People from Girlguiding and the Women’s Institute
Girlguiding and the WI have announced new policies that exclude trans women and girls.
GIRES has set out why this approach is not required by law and why exclusion harms those already facing the greatest barriers to belonging. Read our full statement here:

GIRES logo An update from Trans Advocacy & Complaints Collective logo - Trans Exile Network logo Announcement: Trans rights groups take Government back to European Court for UK's non-compliance in historic Goodwin v. UK ruling. Published: 15th October 2025 Issued by: Trans Advocacy & Complaints Collective & Trans Exile Network
📢 Trans rights groups are taking the UK Government back to the ECtHR.
TACC and Trans Exile Network have filed a joint case arguing that the UK has never complied with the 2002 Goodwin v UK ruling - which established privacy and recognition rights for trans people under Article 8.
GIRES stands with the trans community in honouring their legacy, and we remain committed to preserving the stories, and lived experiences of trans+ lives that shape our understanding. By safeguarding their memory, we help ensure all trans+ lives continue to guide and strengthen the next generation.
For the trans+ people we have lost, those traces form part of the shared knowledge and understanding that holds our community together. Their lives continue in the support we offer each other, the lessons we carry forward, and the spaces we fight to make safer.
