For me it'd be Raz from Psychonauts. First one I can think of that clicked for me (memory holes make things hard) is Raz from Psychonauts. Him trying so hard to get anyone to listen to him when telling the truth & feeling alienated from his own family hit hard.

I very much recommend the Hedon duology, sold as one game under the title Hedon: Bloodrite. Uses GZDoom (made years before the AI bs), and has a very RPG-y feel to a lot of things - including side quests, and multiple ways to complete steps of the main quest.
