We will take strike action next week unless the University rules out compulsory redundancies.
The executives we have lost confidence in continue to forecast the need for another £20m of savings. All from staff losses.
We’ve already lost over 600 colleagues. When will the job cuts end?

A really important message.
When we strike, it’s a collective action. We give up our wages and make other personal sacrifices because we know that we are stronger together.
Our voices are amplified by every single member, colleague and student who joins us on the picket line.
Members of our branch voted to take strike action on 17th-18th March. We are asking the University to rule out compulsory redundancies.
We also passed a unanimous Vote of No Confidence in the University Executive Group.
Join us on the picket lines! #SaveHE

Another 200 job losses have been announced at the University of Dundee.

In August, in a meeting with the Scottish Gov, Nigel Seaton stated that it was “necessary to be clear with staff what redundancies would likely be needed now.”
The University Recovery Plan he drafted stated there would need to be 340 redundancies.
Yesterday he told staff there are no plans.
A great point made at the Scottish Parliament Committee.
Without a growth mindset the University of Dundee will be caught in a vicious cycle of continuing job cuts, losing over 100+ jobs every year due to inflationary pressures.
Why did UEG focus on a major restructuring that will not save money?
We were told that the University of Dundee is following the Scottish Community Engagement principles, which include that “those affected by the process are involved at the earliest opportunity”.
The process started but UEG don’t know what will happen with our data.
It is not meaningful engagement.
Colleagues who went to one of the “Strategy to Recovery” sessions this week were told that UEG don’t know how their feedback will be analysed. It might go out to a third party and AI may be used.
Outsourcing this work whilst UEG has grown. Sounds like there are costs that can still be cut.
Is there more accountability for royalty than there is for leaders and former leaders in the UK university sector?

“DUCU believes that the timing of exits proposed in the VS scheme will cause massive disruption at a very sensitive time…when exams, marking, & processing of grades are taking place.

An excellent article summarising the strength of feeling on campus against the VS scheme and its timing, at the University of Dundee.

Listen to what students and staff think about the current job cuts at the University of Dundee.
Thanks to STV for their continuing excellent reporting.

With Court agendas missing, minutes published late and papers non-existent, it’s our view that the important governance meetings at the University of Dundee should be live streamed and recorded, for openness and transparency.
The current situation at the University of Dundee is that we are not getting our annual pay increase and that promotion processes are paused.
At the same time the uni is refusing to rule out compulsory redundancies, it is advertising over 20 new senior management jobs for academic staff.
A true reflection of what university staff feel about the current Higher Education crisis.
If you missed the Scottish Parliament Committee’s evidence session on Wednesday you can watch it here.
Thanks to the ECYP Committee for inviting us to take part.

11 January 2023, Grady tells UCU senior managers in secret WhatsApp group chat "every single decision we make/thing we do has to be seen through the below lense... Re-elect GS".
11 January 2023, in response to Grady's instruction that everything UCU does has to be "Re-elect GS", a senior manager replies "And has been, hopefully"
🚨🧵The 2024 UCU General Secretary was so corrupt that @vickyblake.bsky.social + I are fighting a Certification Officer case to re-run it, 10 Feb. Grady won by 182 votes from 114,310 members, turnout 15%.
In secret, Grady ordered UCU managers to "Re-elect GS" +said she'd "destroy" her opponents...

Maggie wearing a dark blue coat standing next to 5 people, 4 of whom are wearing bright pink UCU beanies. They are holding the Dundee UCU banner. The Tower Building is in the background.
Glad to be able to pop by the @ducuuo.bsky.social picket line as they were just getting set up this morning.
Staff are on strike in the cold & damp to say NO to compulsory redundancies. Management must engage with staff properly: co-design a recovery plan, do not impose cuts!

I had to change my degree because of university cuts - the impact on students of the Dundee Uni crisis, and the reason @ducuuo.bsky.social is on strike #WeAreTheUniversity www.bbc.com/news/article...
Please read this article as it outlines issues raised by students following the cutting of academic and support staff, and a reduction in modules and degree specialisms.
Thanks to all of them for speaking out and to the BBC for listening to them.
Our students aren’t being heard.
“students aren't told anything at all."

Busy @ducuuo.bsky.social picket lines on day two of their week long strike to save jobs and oppose compulsory redundancies #SaveHE #SaveDundeeUni #NoCompulsoryRedundancies
Do you think staff at the University of Dundee were misled when we were told there would be no redundancies? Or when he told us they hadn’t said there would be no redundancies?
