True story: I showed those (apparently viral) adjustable c-clamps to my wife. She said, “maybe they’re for working on a chest?”

Haven’t frequented it lately, but didn’t Slashdot sort of do this early on? They’d randomly issue a very limited amount of “votes” in an upvote/downvote system. So they were both rare and limited, making them a little more precious. It felt like there was some pressure to use them thoughtfully.

Nearly opposite criticism of the impressionists. A lot of criticism from traditional artists said that they were too reductionist, taking the things that they found in life and not representing them with enough accuracy, skill, and realism. Impressionist actually started as an insult by art critics.

Using photographs, in place of still life/plein air/live models/pure imagination was a mark of inferiority. Now, photography is an artform all its own and has advanced traditional art in interesting ways (motion studies come to mind—horse gait, bird wing flaps).

Fun discussion. No idea why it popped in my feed, but the woodworkers have entered the chat. In our niche, the controversy is over the CNC router. But very similar arguments surrounding folks that employ it. Interestingly, when photography was in its early days, the objection was very similar.

Very nice. Do you do anything in particular for cable management? I’m always looking for the solution for cords in sliders.

I believe you'd be regarded by the prepper community the same way the cosplay community would regard a radioactive spider. "Bite me now, please and thank you."

That one was also on his list as a possibility.

It was once the choice of material as shaft bearings in submarines.

Happy Thanksgiving. My son just bought a project car, so I’m apparently a car guy now not a #woodworking guy anymore. It was nice knowing you all.

Where did you say your shed was, again?

Did they try sunlight? Or bleach? I heard there was a correlation.

It’s my dream, however, that the various woodworking factions (please don’t call us splinter groups) one day unite to overthrow the concrete usurpers, restoring the natural order.

And I see IWF just announced IWF West in San Antonio on their alternate years, so another option, but that will put the date pretty close to AWFS Vegas time. (And probably compete for vendors and attendees.) Neither are as large as World of Concrete unfortunately.

AWFS Fair | Welcome to AWFS Fair

Yep, awfsfair.org was in late July. It alternates with iwfatlanta.com every other year. IWF in Atlanta is a little bigger, but slightly more focused on industrial/professional woodworking. Of course, if you’re ever near Des Moines, stop by our office and I can give you the nickel tour of our shop.

I’m going to guess ipe (Pronounced ee-pay) based on the flecking in the grain and the density & weight. Brazilian hardwood. Long-lasting in decks and outdoor furniture. Resists fire and moisture, even salt water. Used in Atlantic shore boardwalks. A bit pricey, though. Tough on blades and bits.

Yes! I do this all the time. The brown paper bags always get diverted out to my shop. I like to use it between finish coats.

That offer stands for any woodworkers passing through Des Moines. I give the best tours because I’ll let you ride on the freight elevator even though the sign says not to and I show you all the weird parts of the basement. Not in a serial killer way; in a the-building-has-a-lot-of-history way.

Little Woodchucks by Nick Offerman - Penguin Random House From New York Times bestselling author, Emmy-winning actor, and charismatically carnivorous woodworker Nick Offerman, an illustrated woodworking guide with projects for the whole family.

Hey @nickofferman.bsky.social congratulations on Little Woodchucks! I snagged a ticket for the Des Moines book tour stop, so hopefully I’ll be able to say hi. But if you’re in town a bit early I’d be happy to give you the nickel tour of the WOOD magazine shops. sites.prh.com/little-woodc...

Will be a short article about making custom half-tone images using a V-bit on the CNC. Here was my test piece featuring Georgie

Been a while since they let me write an article for this magazine I’m supposedly in charge of. But, I got in a solid stretch of prop making and studio time this week working on a fun little CNC technique. #woodworking #CNC #woodmagazine

Don’t do it. My family owes our lives to my mother-in-law, a weather app, and frantic texts from 3 states away any time a tornado is within 300 miles of us.
