A couple systems I've built in the past use something like this. Basically, your stat + your skill rank = the number of dice you roll. Instead of adding it all up, though, each 5 or 6 is a success, and a 1 is a fail. Add up the successes and fails, and you get the total result.
Space Marines. They do a bit of everything, and give you a basic starting line to learn the game from.
From there... whichever faction looks coolest to you.
