A new report from @buildingdecarb.org finds that 70% of gas utility bills come from infrastructure costs like pipeline replacements and company profits, while the gas itself makes up just 30%.
What can local climate action deliver for NY communities?

Today on Volts: I talk with my old friend @jigarshahdc.bsky.social about the headlong rush to build data centers, the lunacy of building a bunch of behind-the-meter gas-fired power plants to run them, the benefits of distributed capacity & greater grid utilization, & the need for utility innovation.

A milestone in March: for the first time ever, renewables provided more power on the US grid than natural gas.
A very, very good book.

America’s methane gas system is expensive and a key reason why utility bills are rising, reports @carriej.bsky.social. But as BDC's Momentum Q1 | 2026 report shows, high-efficiency #HeatPumps and other #CleanHeat solutions offer states a way to address this energy affordability problem. #EnergySky

One reason for journalists to be on BlueSky is that it’s the only social media platform I’m aware of that still doesn’t downrank links to news and other sites. The corporate socials all seem to have adopted a casino approach to their users: lure in with shiny objects and *never show them an exit.*
Canary Media is turning 5! It's absolutely the best day-to-day reporting on the clean energy transition on the internet.
Green funders: this is the kind of media we need. Fucking fund it!

I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't had any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since typical grants are for three years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.
