I tell every student to read their writing out loud. The brain processes it differently--if you have to form the words with your mouth, it's closer to reading it like someone other than yourself. It doesn't allow your brain to skip over mistakes/unclear parts with a subliminal "I know what I mean"

Unflinching refusal to use or allow the use of A.I. in reading & writing should be the uncontroversial, default position of teachers from K-12 to colleges & universities. If our administrators tell us we "have to" we tell them to eff off. We will not kill the planet's water for systemic plagiarism.

There is no “ethical” version of a totalizing, coercive, Utopian ideology. That’s what we were supposed to have learned in the 20th century. That AI is fundamentally eugenic makes it clear we should be resisting, not adopting.

Let’s just call it “immoral cognition” from now on.

It has long been a specious area of study. Its deep corruption makes it worse than that.

The funny thing about a certain type of angry conspiracy guy is that they’re literally being confronted with an elite paedophile ring and a tyrannical government at the same time right now, and because it isn't being done by the people they wanted it to be done by they’re all being pussies about it

What I’m seeing here is that Epstein is a nexus point for the “intellectual” cabal that shores up the race science justifying our current immigration and anti-DEI policies (Huberman), as well the tone policing moderates (Brooks) that hamstrings oppositions. Oh and their billionaire benefactors.

david brooks has been a hack for decades who has written column after column at ny times that was eviscerated the moment they hit "publish." -- he has been awarded with a plum contract at the atlantic. because in the world of the media, nothing fails upwards like a conservative straight white man.

The Accidental Winners of the War on Higher Ed Go to a small liberal-arts college if you can.

Higher education is a hellscspe right now, attacked by the freedom government in one side and AI on the other.

This fall, I spent a month visiting elite liberal arts colleges, on the instinct that they would be more resilient in every way. My story (gift link):

this recent genAI discourse is at least helping to identify the non-serious scholars. like if your point is to use it to help you find things or summarize things or weed out things that might not be relevant, you are not a serious scholar. and if you can't see why that is, you are a bad scholar :)

Stop the Merger Madness Rule No. 1 when big deals get announced: Don’t believe the hype

The history of media mega-mergers is all lies, broken promises and strategic blunders. Merger madness only leads to disaster.

Netflix may have won the bidding war. But the losers in these deals are always creators, writers, workers and the rest of us sitting in the audience.

New Pressing Issues!

All media mergers end up hurting writers, actors, directors, and everyone else who works in the industry. Executives, assistants, caterers, teamsters, everyone. Fewer companies means fewer jobs, period.

If You Can’t Become HBO, Buy ‘Em? The future of HBO and HBO Max under Netflix is a bit unclear — even after Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters fielded numerous questions about it.

Honestly, the fate of Casey Bloys is the part of this equation that interests me most. I'm not just saying that because at least 5375 of my followers are Casey Bloys sock puppet accounts waiting to insult me for hating "Task." Netflix has largely forgotten how to develop GOOD TV. Casey has not.

Everytime I read a thread critiquing the commercial LLMs that are being imbedded into *everything*, several people will jump in to say “Ahem, ChatGPT helps me write emails.” as if that’s not a totally embarrassing thing to admit.
