The Archers raises important issues often overlooked in rural areas, such as the huge decline of organised religion and its impact on rural churches. While homeless budgies may not be a serious issue, I understand your point; some storylines are more compelling than others.
It's lazy because it's a non-story, merely padding, whereas there are literally dozens of storylines left hanging and characters we have not heard from in years. It's also simply not believable (for multiple reasons), and the dialogue was cringeworthy.
