When Viktor Orbán changed Hungary's voting system - making it easier for the biggest party to win supermajorities with a minority of votes - it was understandably criticised as authoritarian.
So why is it that in the UK we accept an even more disproportional system as the norm?
Our political views are diverse. That's a good thing.
No one party speaks for the whole country, and our opinions cannot be reduced to a choice between two options.
It's time for a voting system that recognises this. It's time for Proportional Representation.
‘York City Council vote to support proportional representation:
It’s great to see yet another council backing PR and the governing Labour Party and opposition Lib Dems both supported the motion.

Q. If you could pass one law tomorrow with no parliamentary obstacles, what would it be and why? A. It's very very easy. It's the law that would change our country for the long term. It's the law that would open up so much - whether it's health and care, education, transport, social justice, environment. And that law would be to bring in Proportional Representation. - ED DAVEY AT LIBERAL DEMOCRAT CONFERENCE
It was great to hear this from @eddavey.libdems.org.uk at @libdems.org.uk conference.
The health of our democracy impacts everything: the economy, the environment, our public services, our safety and security.
It's time to transform how we do politics. It's time for PR. @libdems4er.bsky.social
I spoke in the debate following a petition about forcing MPs who change party to face a by-election. This doesn't address the real problem in our democracy: people are fighting the first-past-the-post system. We need real, fundamental change.

Our electoral system has led to voters up and down the country being ignored for decades - and now the system is breaking.
Our new report shows the direct link between First Past the Post and a possible Farage victory in 2029.
Difficult times call for cooperation and dialogue. But our voting system keeps giving total power to parties that only a fraction of voters support.
On 30% of the vote, one party could win full control of our economy, health, foreign policy and defence.
We can't take that risk.
💥 More than 20,000 people have signed the petition calling for changing the voting system to be part of the Representation of the People Bill.
First Past the Post leaves millions of people without representation. It's time to scrap it.

It’s time to end Britain’s first-past-the-post election lottery
“An electoral system should do two things: ensure that the majority rules and that significant minorities are adequately represented. First past the post achieves neither.”

Every time Labour created a modern parliament – Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, London – they chose proportional representation writes MP, Jenny Riddell Carpenter. Why is Westminster the exception? If PR is good enough for devolved Britain, it’s good enough for the UK.

🗯️ "At the next election, a minority party could win a majority of seats with just a fraction of the popular vote."

"Under these rules, negative campaigning is rational. Bar charts (sometimes questionable ones) matter far more than manifestos."
Our campaigner Livvy writes about what she saw and heard in Gorton and Denton - and why the case for PR is stronger than ever. 👇
People are sharing polls with Labour, Reform & Green pretty much neck and neck in Gorton & Denton. This shows that tactical voting is a must to stop Reform. It also proves we have the numbers to do it. But what some may have missed, is the question of who is more *willing* to vote tactically...
TAKE ACTION: Tell Keir Starmer that the Representation of the People Bill must scrap First Past the Post and replace it with a proportional system.

The daft thing is that with Proportional Representation there'd be no need for this self-destructive war within Labour. It could split into its component parts - left and right - and people could vote for what they wanted. It's only First-Past-the-Post that forces these irreconcilables together.
“Labour has a majority, while simultaneously facing the prospect of electoral oblivion. Instead, I am suggesting that imagination be used.
I do think that if Labour wishes to restore its credibility, it will deliver electoral reform.”

“First past the post allows the two traditional parties of government to threaten and cajole us, warning that we’ll split the vote if we don’t support them. The splitting-the-vote argument is not a result of the system. It is the point of the system.”

Each constituency has a single MP, yet for most people this means the MP who “represents” them in parliament doesn’t share their politics, didn’t win a majority of the vote in their local area, and was chosen by a tiny handful of party insiders long before election day.
"A dedicated group of independents and like-minded members of the two parties need to put their heads together, with serious philanthropic backing, to develop a real movement to create proportional representation in America".

I have put up in the Get PR Done Facebook group for people to read and comment.
The Labour NEC including Starmer block Andy Burnhams chance to stand in the Manchester by-election.
#AndyBurnham
It’s become normality that Starmer says one thing to get elected as Labour leader, then does the opposite, just like on PR.
#getPRdone
But there is always a post: 👇🏽
Andy Burnham has announced that he is seeking permission to stand in the upcoming Gorton and Denton parliamentary by-election.
If he won and became an MP, Burnham could mount a leadership challenge against Starmer.
Burnham is a strong supporter of Proportional Representation💪
This May’s elections are expected to bring chaos because our voting system is broken.
I’ve written to my MP to push for fairer elections before it’s too late. It takes 2 minutes to do the same here:
