There's also the early modern age which coincides with the start of colonialism, and I think this gap in interest does show a lot of things (and not just in metal of course, fantasy literature etc)
I have been too, yeah. We need more modern era inspired metal, as much as we need more historically grounded medieval inspired metal, and not the white supremacist version
Ever thought about the intense historical/aesthetic interest that metal has in the medieval ages, as opposed to the almost zero interest for the colonial period that starts after, even though the latter is so much better to study in terms of understanding the current state of the world? Yeah.
