1. The food. "My mouth is watering” is the top comment I’ve gotten from early readers, which means my secret (not so secret) evil (not really evil) plan is working!

I loved both inventing fantastical foods for a fantasy world and lovingly describing some dishes based on my own favorites.

A contact form reads: Subject: Checking Authenticity Body of message Hi there Beth. I have been contacted by someone who is using the email, [email blacked out], and using you name and one of your novels 'Feast of the Starving Stone: The Chef’s Five' to engage with me as a fellow author - if it is you then great, if it is not, as i suspect, then this is a fake approach. I just wanted to be sure. thanks. [signed name blacked out] You're a real person, right? No, I'm a bot. Please don't include existential questions in a contact form. Yes.

I just found out that an AI scammer is impersonating me in their spam campaign. I am LIVID.

Please, please share this post. Warn people. I’m horrified that someone might be ripped off in my name.

No one is safe from being impersonated like this.

2. An older woman main character. Glendevyn is solidly middle-aged, with the gray hair and wisdom to show it, but also with a tough history, not to mention insecurities about stepping into a position where so many people are relying on her. What if she lets them down?

Haha 🤣

3. A nonbinary love interest. Great enby characters are still rare in fiction, and few get to have satisfying romances (I could write an essay about why I think that is), so I wanted to write one. Irdruan is a sweet, shy cinnamon roll who doesn’t know how to tell their best friend how they feel.

4. A decolonized museum. Museums are awesome. But they (sometimes) have a problematic side—e.g stealing other people’s cultural artifacts—that I didn’t want to replicate. The Infinite Pantry is very serious about informed consent for everything in its collection. It’s even a plot point!

Hell is not famous for having trees, but I guarantee that, in addition to the heat, it's full of pollen.

5. The Pantry’s other denizens: cats and gargoyles. Obviously my cozy fantasy was going to have cats in it. But the Pantry also has a contingent of gargoyle helpers. Sprinkling in bits of love-hate relationship between the cats and gargoyles was some of the most fun I had writing this.
