Based on a photovoice study conducted during my PhD and together with Winfred Lipina Koinet, @matcashmore.bsky.social and Todd A. Crane, we edited a (non-academic) booklet that foregrounds the voices and pictures of Maasai pastoralists in southern Kenya.

At the top of the page is the booklet title "Witnessing changing livelihoods through photovoice in southern Kenya: Transformations and persistence of Maasai pastoralists in a changing climate". Below is the mention "Edited by Edwige Marty, Winfred Lipina Koinet, Matthew Cashmore and Todd A Crane". There is then a picture of a Maasai shepherd herding some goats through trees. He is carrying a water jerrican and his other hand holds a spear, while he has a knife sheathed at his waist.

April is the climate change and resilience month of the #IYRP2026, and thus seems a particularly good moment to talk about the experiences, resourcefulness, creativity and knowledges that pastoralists deploy every day to manage climate and other livelihood risks.

‘It’s destroyed me completely’: Kenyan moderators decry toll of training of AI models Employees describe the psychological trauma of reading and viewing graphic content, low pay and abrupt dismissals

In case you missed it this ⬇️ It is still going on. Weirdly in a era where people are asking if a machine can be a person whilst simultaneously treating people like machines. Having to ask questions about both.

It's weird times guys.

After Trump Officials Cut Food Aid to Kenya, Children Starved to Death “Brutal and traumatizing”: Interviews and a trove of internal documents show government officials and aid workers desperately tried to warn Trump advisers about impending disaster and death.

NEW: Without USAID funding to help buy food for refugees, the World Food Program rushed to prioritize families based on need, determining that only half the population would get food.

Refugees learned which half they were in from a number stamped on the back of their ration card.

Doing this photovoice with amazing participants in Shompole, Kajiado, was probably my favorite part of my PhD research. Now working with Lipina on making the amazing pictures produced on changing livelihoods in a changing climate available in a booklet in English and Maa.

Last paper out of my PhD is out! 🙂 Written with Lipina Koinet, we use photovoice data co-produced with pastoralists in southern Kenya to explore how they view and experience livelihood diversification and the tensions associated with it in a changing climate.

Rich, high-polluting nations have failed East Africa, delivering only 4% of the climate finance they promised under international agreements. Climate finance is not charity, it’s a matter of justice. Read more in our latest report ➡️ africa.oxfam.org/latest/press...

Interesting research James, finding some commonalities with research done in Kenya! But there it was not only the school calendar that was carried over from colonial times but also the perceptions of certain agro-based livelihoods (here pastoralism) and the devaluation of local knowledges
