I grew up in Greece. When people say 8-century-old buildings are “ancient,” my immediate thought is, they don’t know what the word means 😂 8 centuries is reasonably modern history in Greece, no kidding!
Thank you.
The problem with most machine-based random number generators is that they’re not TRULY random, so if you need genuine randomness it is sometimes necessary to link your code to an external random process like a physical noise source or the current rate of US tariffs on a given country.

Wonderful way to start a Sunday. I love the Temeraire series! Naomi Novik is such an excellent writer.
Margaret Atwood and Jane Austen. The fantasy I love reading has been dominated by mediocre male writers for decades, but lately I’ve found some spectacular female ones, like Naomi Novik, Carissa Broadbent, and Samantha Shannon. Can’t believe I’ve been making do with mediocrity for so long!
If only there were a book, I hear you say, about the reality of the special relationship and the folly of relying on the Americans as allies.
I’m very cautious when it comes to books with only 5* ratings, no matter how many. Too often they are badly edited/unedited self-pub books. You’re not doing anyone any favors by withholding 3* reviews. You’re just changing the threshold and as a consequence destroying the credibility of ratings.
I just heard from a friend working in climate science that her department is creating a couple of positions for American scientist friends who are looking to get out or expect to get fired (I live in Germany). Maybe this will boost European science.

The German Interior Ministry has identified a Russia-linked disinformation campaign spreading fake claims of election fraud in Germany just days before Sunday’s vote.

This is a an exemplary history book. The narrator of the audiobook (Peter Noble) is also fantastic.
“A Line in the Sand” is not about a specific event, but about the geopolitics of a region during a defining (and well-chosen) period. Some events read like a thriller…and yet they happened!
The root that tears apart your foundation begins as a seed of distrust, hate, and blame.
The seed that grew into a dictatorship in Europe didn’t arrive overnight.
It started with everyday Germans mad about inflation and looking for someone to blame.
It's very good!
😂😂😂😂
Your ADHD ass seems able to handle an impressive list of tasks!
Such a shame most of Frank Schätzing’s books haven’t been translated to English. Such an excellent writer.
Preach! I was going to do the same thing, I just need enough time away from mothering two neurodivergent kids to be able to research the alternatives…

No ambition at all, China 😂
“The thing that I can’t get over is that the actual richest man in the world directed my fucking firing. I make $50k a year and work to keep drinking water safe. The richest man in the world decided that was an expense too great for the American taxpayer.”
Maybe they actually do. America got so ungodly rich by WWII. It was such a boon after the 1929 crash. So, yeah. Who’s gonna get the most contracts should we decide to rearm? Hmmm
It is time we stopped fetishising American politics and culture and business.
Things looking up, then? 😬
ditto
I'm honestly jealous of people who can enjoy this kind of comfort, I wish I could do the same!
