My first @winnipegfreepress.com story for 2026 is about experiencing Manitoban winter as a newcomer. This was an eye-opening piece to work on and there's so much more I could've written. But for now here's a story of a lovely 8yo, and his wonderful family.

I've seen local newsrooms in the UK decimated after publishing houses are bought by MNCs. In one editorial floor, we had to trawl online for stories, churning out articles based on analytics rather than what's actually of value. Yes, we v are lucky here.

In addition, to the Free Press’s daily coverage, the Free Press Community Review weekly newspapers also cover small, local arts groups of all sorts — from amateur theatre troupes to local square-dancing clubs to shops specializing in manga comics. fpcommunityreview.com

I mean we have one of the few remaining books sections in the country, featuring local reviewers and books. I reported on local writing all year, both in my section and in arts and life, including a roundup on 10 notable local books from 2025 (which could have easily been 20) running Monday. 🤷
