real man don't wash their hands! Oorah!!
But this all depends on largest in the world capital influx from goverment, students and private donors + and easy and desirable immigration to US for students and professors. So OP is right, with both of these under attack what else will be left?
Still as a system as a whole US education leaves a lot to be desired, and has a lot of negative influences on educational commercialization everywhere on the world.
Well some of them are public not private (despite the price tag still > elsewhere in the world), and they have a lot of good lectureres with good presentation skills. Concerning indicators there are of course rankings, with all their caveats, and some "public" Unis score high.
He's eyes are saying "but I just fed you!!"
In all seriousness, yeah US Unis are probably the best, as they could previosuly vacuum all the top scientists there and this will get you the best science + the good teaching professors. But it's telling of how much of these best are either immigrants or children of immigrants.
It's debatable by some if the world outside US exists at all :))
