Original 1925 jacket cover of The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby
Here is a novel, glamorous, ironical, compassionate a marvellous fusion into unity of the curious incongruities of the life of the period which reveals a hero like no other one who could live at no other time and in no other place. But he will live as a character, we surmise, as long as the memory of any reader lasts.
"There was something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life. ..
It was an
extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person and which it is not likely I shall ever find again?"
It is the story of this Jay Gatsby who came so mysteriously to West Egg, of his sumptuous er-tertainments, and of his love for Daisy Buchanan a story that ranges from pure lyrical beauty to sheer brutal realism, and is infused with a sense of the strangeness of human circumstance in a heedless universe.
It is a magical, living book, blended of irony, romance, and mysticism.

They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.

I’m going out on a limb here and not bringing a heavy wool coat to Chicago in mid-April so I can pack an extra outfit+shoes…. Don’t make me regret this, Chicago.

I always get teary eyed at the end of the Jungle Book when Mowgli leaves the jungle to follow the girl into the village, but this time, the moment he made the decision, my son said “that’s his mommy” and now I’m bawling, it really put me over the top.

I do love that in his mind, ripping off all his clothes and dancing naked in the street is part of checking the mail. He brings an energy to daily life that is typically seen only in performance art.

Well, it finally happened, I chased the small child 200 yards across the lawn but wasn’t fast enough… he ran into the road completely nude and started striking poses on the center line. After timeout I asked him if he understood why a timeout, he said “because I was checking the mail.” No, sir. No.

oh yeah, the problem is that 15-19 year olds aren't getting pregnant, not that everyone's future is so bleak that even 15-19 year olds are making good decisions.

I am so angry. Two Durham, NC kids - 11-year-old Genesis and 6-year-old Denis of Burton Elementary Magnet School - were taken by ICE at their regular asylum case appointment, and immediately deported without due process.

a cartoon character is sitting down with a smile on his face and a pink cheek . Alt: a cartoon character is sitting down with a smile on his face and a pink cheek .

When we were buckling our seatbelts this morning, 5yo goes “If this is the last day before you die, you don’t need to wear a seatbelt” and I turned to look at him and he was smiling like this, so we might all die today I don’t know.

FBI Extracts Suspect’s Deleted Signal Messages Saved in iPhone Notification Database The case was the first time authorities charged people for alleged “Antifa” activities after President Trump designated the umbrella term a terrorist organization.

NEW: The FBI was able to forensically extract copies of incoming Signal messages from a defendant’s iPhone, even after the app was deleted, because copies of the content were saved in the device’s push notification database, multiple people present for FBI testimony in a trial told 404 Media.

My child woke up this morning, ran to the window, said “wow the Easter bunny hid the eggs so good, I can’t even see any” and this lazy ass agnostic went 😶

Luckily I had a stash of hatchimals squirreled away from Walmart’s post-Christmas clearance… childhood wonder lives to see another day.

Publix sent us a $5 coupon for their grand opening next weekend, which really helps make up for 24 months of noise, dust, traffic, and loss of 10 acres of trees. I’m definitely not plotting how to make that store cost the corporation more money than it’s worth by creating infinite minor nuisances.

Me explaining Easter to my 5yo: there was this guy named Jesus who said we should love each other…
5yo: uh huh
Me: And people decided to kill him…
5yo: uh huh
Me: But he came back to life & said now you have to remember what I said about loving people
5yo: And then the Easter bunny brought presents!

This morning my grumpy child dismissively told me that the sun is “just a white circle” and I can’t stop thinking about it.

He refused to put his pajamas back on and I’m 100% sure it’s because he thinks his brother will laugh when he wakes up naked in the morning. What 2 year old can commit that much to a bit?

This week our toddler figured out that if he stays awake until his big brother comes to bed he will have a captive audience for his 45 min comedy set about pee pee, poo poo, and the wake up light that culminates in complete nudity. Do other people just KNOW they are raising a theater kid?

Also my husband calls publix "pooplicks" because he went to one in Florida and someone had pooped on the floor and people just ran their carts over it and made poop stripes all over the store, just putting that out into the world.

They built a gd Publix next door and the noise, dust, loss of trees(!), and fucked traffic was obnoxious enough but now I'm getting multiple daily aggressive texts from predatory real estate jerks offering to buy our "house" (our land) for much less than it's actually worth.

My toddler has been yelling “Moddy” or “Dammy” whenever he doesn’t really need anything but senses that he’s not the center of attention. Honestly it feels very dehumanizing.

My selection is “stairway to heaven” because my bro-ass gym teacher made us jog laps around the gym to it every day of sophomore year and hearing it drains my will to live to sophomore-year gym class levels. Dangerously low. Imagine running to that song. I longed for the sweet escape of death.
