This is the first article out of my @erc.europa.eu StG project EUROTYPES, more to come! www.adinaakbik.eu/projects/270...
In November 2025, I had the opportunity to present this paper to the @ec.europa.eu's SG REFORM unit in Brussels. Credit photo: @cnichele65.bsky.social. Many thanks for the excellent graphic summarizing the paper! 👇
Many thanks to @bjoernbremer.bsky.social, Josh Robison, and participants in the lunch seminar at @polscileiden.bsky.social social for helpful comments on previous versions of the manuscript. Special thanks to Natália Kubalová for excellent research assistance on the survey.
Drawing on original survey data from #Germany, #Italy, #Romania, and #Sweden, we find that:
• Positive economic #stereotypes → more support for EU redistribution
• Negative economic #stereotypes → less support.
In other words, national stereotypes don’t just appear in media or political rhetoric.
📣New article out in @ejprjournal.bsky.social, co-authored with the wonderful @christinaluiset.bsky.social 📣
Do national stereotypes about 'hardworking' or 'lazy' Europeans actually shape public support for #EU solidarity?
They do - and we show how. 🔎🇪🇺

Many thanks to @karolinapomorska.bsky.social & Emilian Kavalski for including me in their special issue! I am grateful for meeting many amazing scholars from the region along the way: Magdalena Góra, @natsty.bsky.social, @tomasweiss.bsky.social, @gnoutcheva.bsky.social, Jozef Batora, Stefan Cibian
More broadly, the findings highlight the justificatory role of stereotypes in multilateral negotiations and how exogenous shocks can reshape their meaning.
Using an interpretive approach, the analysis shows an emerging transformation of stereotypes about the region, which is starting to be recognised for its historical insight into #Russia.
Borrowing from social psychology, I propose a novel lens to study perceptions about #CEE governments in #EU external policy through the concept of regional stereotypes.
📣New publication out in Cambridge Review of International Affairs📣
My latest article explores how @consilium.europa.eu officials perceive several #CEE governments—once dismissed as 'Russophobic'—in #EU foreign policy after the full-scale invasion of #Ukraine.

The findings show that while the Monetary Dialogues may lack the intensity of congressional hearings, the ECB is [surprisingly] held to a higher standard of accountability than the Fed.
Analyzing over 1,000 parliamentary questions and their respective answers, I reassess the common assumption that congressional hearings with the Fed ensure stronger parliamentary accountability than the Monetary Dialogues with the ECB.

Empirically, we study the European Parliament in the Economic and Monetary Union, focusing on the Economic Dialogues in the ECON Committee during 2014-19. The article is available here: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
We build a structural account of the variation of questions in legislative oversight that includes two drivers: (a) the legal framework of the oversight relationship at play; and (b) the nature of the policy activity under scrutiny.
🚨Under what conditions do members of parliaments ask different types of oversight questions? 🚨
I answer this question in a new article published in European Union Politics co-authored with the wonderful @martami.bsky.social

In a new study for the EU Parliament, Mark Dawson & @adinaakbik.bsky.social demonstrate how the EU Council's tendency to instruct other institutions and its limited accountability have established a gap between its de jure role and its de facto power. Learn more: www.delorscentre.eu/en/publicati...
