The message left by Pope Leo XIV in the guestbook of the Great Mosque of Algiers: “May the mercy of the Most High keep the noble Algerian people and the entire human family in peace and freedom.”

A WHOLE CIVILIZATION WILL DIE TONIGHT My son needs lunch, and I have to put his backpack together, but a whole civilization will die tonight, so I'm wondering if they've closed their schools. Like, a snow day, maybe, except instead of snow it's "keep your children home so if you die, you die together" — instead of "well open back up once the plows have cleared" it's "we don't know if we'll be here tomorrow, hold your babies tight." It's just "talk" I'm told, which I've been told before. "It's how the president makes his deals." But I've never heard anyone talk about other human beings this way, and I'm not certain I can look my son in the eyes if we all agree to stomach it one more time. A civilization will die tonight, but as I zip up his backpack and kiss him off to school I think: if this is what we call leadership then I'm not entirely sure ours isn't already dead. @michaelfdubois Mukad A QuBoy @michacifdubois
Brutal.
If any regular person in America phoned in a bomb threat and then called back to say that they weren’t going to blow up the place today, that person would still go to prison.
He really is that stupid.
When I let my WaPo subscription lapse last month, Dana was one of the few writers left whom I truly missed. Can't wait to find him on the other side of this transition. Now if Max Boot and David Ignatius could relocate outlets as well....
I actually think the behavior of the Republicans in the audience has been more noteworthy than Trump’s speech itself.
The braying, boorish jeers and yawps of a party fully given over to fascism.
Fuck.
The great Sérgio Mendes would have turned 85 today. 🎂
His song “Mas Que Nada” (1966) was the first US hit to be sung in Portuguese. “It opened a lot of doors for me,” he said, “It’s a great, haunting chant that is fun to play .., but I had no idea it would become such a special song.”
#RIP
Time for Democratic officials to petition the state bar of each DOJ lawyer who works on these BS cases to be disbarred. These prosecutors know the case is "not supported by probable cause." That is grounds for disbarment. Time to take the fight to the corrupt DOJ!
Stop making sense, NY Times Pitchbot. You are a parody account. It says so right there in the fine print. We come here for the jokes, not truth.
The CIA just stopped publishing their World Factbook and took every page, including the archived copies of previous versions!
This sucks. It was public domain, so I recovered the 2020 edition (the last one published as a zip file) and shared it to GitHub simonwillison.net/2026/Feb/5/t...
I swear this clip is not edited. Trump pivots from downplaying the killing of Renee Good and Alex Pretti ("two people out of tens of thousands and you get bad publicity") to in the very next breath claiming "we've been very tough on the waters," leaving Tom Llamas baffled ("the waters?")
I have been a subscriber since the mid-1990's when I was in D.C. for law school (I continued my subscription digitally here is Arkansas once that became a thing). My subscription ends on Saturday, and just this morning I made the painful decision not to renew. Too many familiar voices now gone. Sad.

We are living through the total moral collapse of the United States of America.
Folks get touchy about the Nazi Germany comparisons but I cannot think of a more apt comparison, at least in the modern history of developed democracies.
Fight and help win a world war.
Establish a global order that cements your national power for 80 years.
Blow it all up.
What am I missing?
This would be a good moment for top editors in our major news organizations to call a meeting to announce to their staff that Trump has lost his mind and you don’t have to cover him like he’s normal anymore.
This is the craziest thing out of this administration that I have heard to date.
Similar to the reason why yelling “fire” in a crowded theater is not, in fact, protected as free speech.
The U.S. is giving dying mall vibes.
I can't explain it, but you know I'm right.
I use Excel all day everyday, and I review contracts for a living!
It's wild but not surprising that last week the White House was leaning into "these seditious Democrats dared suggest that troops were receiving illegal orders!!!" and this week they are scrambling to figure out who to blame for issuing illegal orders.
I sincerely wish either most Americans would read the actual batshit crazy stuff that Trump posts on TruthSocial, or that journalists would report about Trump's cray-cray posts. I feel like the vast majority of Americans aren't aware.
Do it. Take these to another grand jury. Then a 2nd and a 3rd, until we get a breaking news story about how much you suck at this. And if you do manage to get a true bill, we can watch you lose again in pretrial motions. Do it! I live to watch you lose! www.politico.com/news/2025/12...
It's great that reporting on the double tap has spotlighted the abject criminality of this Administration.
But don't forget: Venezuela is not waging war on America or Americans, and the men killed were not combatants.
The first strike was every bit as illegal as the second.
How embarrassing.
Administration sources were all-in on this Russian wishlist until it was revealed that it was an *actual* Russian wishlist and not just the worst possible peace plan for Ukraine.
⚡️Rubio tells senators 28-point Ukraine peace deal is not a U.S. plan.
Speaking at the Halifax International Security Forum, U.S. senators critical of the 28-point peace plan said that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told them that the current proposal does not amount to the actual U.S. plan.
