This funding - along with vital warm homes money that can lower bills and emissions - is key to showing that action on climate can work for people and planet

By backing nature-friendly farming schemes, govt can now ensure that all farmers are paid fairly to deliver important environmental work

There's much to celebrate for the environment in today's spending review

Money for sustainable farming, habitats & flooding has been protected. This is key to building a more resilient country that can withstand threats to food, communities & livelihoods posed by an increasingly volatile climate

This is what farming with climate change looks like

After the second worst harvest on record in 2024, farmers in England have had record breaking rain in September, followed very little rain and record breaking sun & heat in March & April

Good for berries I guess, less good for lots of others!

"Increasing consumption of plant-based food and eating less meat would cut costs to the NHS", says @jimdickson.bsky.social

Great to be talking to MPs w/ @green-alliance.org.uk, @gfi.org & @foodfoundation.bsky.social about how sustainable diets can improve health, boost growth & meet green goals

Last month, Defra abruptly paused applications to the sustainable farming incentive scheme, leaving farmers without funding options to support land management and nature restoration.

@lucypegg.bsky.social, senior political adviser, discussed the routes ahead with @climatecentreuk.bsky.social:

Rachel Reeves risks 'hammer blow' to food security and nature Nature could be in the firing line as Chancellor Rachel Reeves gives her spring statement in the Commons on Wednesday.

Farmers and environmentalists alike know the farming budget is key to UK security & stability

@green-alliance.org.uk asked the Chancellor to protect this funding alongside 50+ orgs, including the NFU, @nationaltrust.bsky.social & @rspb.bsky.social

Farmers have a critical role to play in building a resilient food system in the face of global instability. But they need to have certainty and clarity on future funding

If Ministers want value for money, the obvious next step is to re-open Higher Tier Countryside Stewardship and Landscape Recovery

Airport expansion would wipe out carbon savings of government’s clean power plan Claimed growth benefits of expansion don’t stack up and will create major climate damage

statistic of the day:

approving the expansion of Heathrow, Luton and Gatwick airports would wipe out ALL the benefits of the government’s 2030 "clean power" target within five years of expanded operation, according to analysis by the New Economics Foundation (NEF)

Every January, Oxford hosts two farming conferences: the mainstream Oxford Farming Conference and the newer Oxford Real Farming Conference, which focuses on transforming the food system. 👨‍🌾🌱

We attended both this year, and in this blog, @lucypegg.bsky.social writes on the lessons we learned:

Last week the Environment Secretary gave us an early Christmas present... the announcement of plans for a food strategy 🎁🍽️

Here's what @green-alliance.org.uk believe that strategy much prioritise if its to get to grips with food poverty, farm incomes and the environmental impact of our diets 👇

Fantastic to hear Environment Secretary Steve Reed announce plans for a UK-wide, cross-departmental food strategy today

We need a joined up plan to reduce the impact of our diets on nature and climate - alongside equally urgent work on food poverty, food-related health issues, and more

Already squeezed by supply chains, we wont tackle water pollution by playing a blame game with farmers. Our briefing looks at what govt can do to rapidly make progress on one of their flagship commitments. Plenty of scope to raise private finance, & ensure costs fall on those most able to pay.

I wrote for @green-alliance.org.uk on the positives from the budget for nature-friendly farming - and what Steve Reed must do now to secure crucial long-term funding for the agri transition

Proving Defra offers value for money, by bolstering regulation + ambition, will be key in the coming months 👇
