Winning the “Life at Night” category in our 2025/26 Astrophotography Competition was Richard Murray’s shot, “Snail Trail to the Stars”, capturing a snail beneath The Plough asterism.

Congratulations, Richard - you really snailed it! 🐌

the entire difference between kyle rittenhouse and alex pretti is that kyle rittenhouse was there to shoot people the cops wanted to shoot and alex pretti was there to protect people the cops wanted to shoot

I finally watched it over Christmas (of my own accord) because of its reputation as a Christmas classic. I loathed it. Genuinely one of the worst films I've ever seen, and I watch a lot of crap.

they didn’t leak it to make the shooter look innocent, but to make the victim look guilty. not guilty of a crime. guilty of having a visibly queer wife. guilty of liberalism. guilty of opposing the regime. they don’t seek to exonerate themselves, only to demonstrate who deserves to die.

on tuesday night i held several of the world's greatest filmmakers hostage for a 15-minute speech about what critics & artists owe to each other in the age of rapid enshittification. i'm not entirely sure why i did that.

anyway you can read it here if you want to: www.indiewire.com/criticism/mo...

losing my mind at the "she should have followed directions" people

really? really? you're cool with "if you don't follow directions, they get to kill you"? that seems like a good state of affairs to you? that seems like how law enforcement ought to work: instant obeisance or death?

There are fascists out there who think pedophilia is bad. You do not have to cite fascists to argue that pedophilia is bad.

This is not complicated.

YouTube actually did exist 20 years ago, as of this year I think. Twitter was the year after though.

As usual with this issue, Harris is calling for a compromise that already exists. Every sporting body has standards for how long athletes must be on hormones before they can compete as women.

The problem isn’t that we’re ignoring ‘reasonable concerns,’ the problem is that republicans are lying.

I don't think it's simpering praise. He was an interesting man. I didn't agree with much that he said, but he was interesting and he was growing, and his death is a significant loss for those who believe engagement can help bridge disagreements.

From an Atlantic editor.

I cannot get over how the entire centrist hivemind is attempting to wish into existence a person, and a movement, that does not exist. You are journalists, you are supposed to describe things as they are, not how you want them to be!

As ever it’s good to remember the sort of coverage MLK got in life from the sort of people who have now appointed themselves arbiters of his legacy.

The lack of humour is its biggest downfall. Almost everything on here is (in my experience) super serious. Makes me use it far less than I used Twitter. Even when X got flooded with Nazis, at least there’d still be funny tweets from people I liked. Where are all the funny posts?

It’s One of the Weirdest Mistakes in Movie History. I Spent Months Investigating How It All Went Wrong. The story behind cinema’s most mysterious bird.

i still can't believe how much i enjoyed reading this deeply investigated piece about a bird-related error in the McG-directed Charlie's Angels movie from 25 years ago

Screen grab of Twitter post my pundit Matt Yglesias saying that California governor Newsom is not only correct on merit to oppose trans athletes, but that it's bizarre to see the Democratic party line up on an issue that is opposed 70-30.

Interracial marriage did not cross 50% approval in the US until 1996, when I was 30 years old. Good political messaging drives opinion, it doesn't follow it.

A Century of Cinema My favourite film of every year since 1920.

I love lists like this. I made this one a while back, though it’s just one film from each year instead of multiple (& it probably needs an update now too, not all of these will be accurate). boxd.it/bhfmK
