The witch show, it's good

Boarding this shot so that everyone but pouty Agott is looking at Coco is subtle perfection

I think they may have misread Richeh pointing with her finger as a thumbs up, which is fine because this is funnier

All of this makes the episode more of a conceptually rich *and* technically demanding one, but Masamitsu Abe's direction can still be evocative

It's an obscene amount of work that is justified because it allows you to inhabit a world that feels well-defined, but even that is just half the battle. Since, you know, then you have to actually follow those guidelines and draw/paint all of these very particular elements

But while you can sorta get away with adlib background characters, you most definitely need (especially with Shirahama being so particular about details) endless design sheets for all the highly specific props and elements they come across in this world

Those flashy sequences catch the attention of the viewers, but the core of this episode & undoubtedly the biggest workload is the absurd amount of design tasks it required. At most, people will remark that it's nice to see many different witches. And they're right, Coco agrees as well!

The sakuga extravaganza is due next week, but I love how the dragon already feels fleshy - it makes the threat all the scarier. Shout out to the fire processing as well, accentuating how beautiful the shapes are

But that doesn't mean the show doesn't try! By incorporating [redacted], you use elements from the narrative to increase the tension, and a 2D TB is a classic technique to amplify that effect as well. I think any new viewer still leaves this moment with a solid Oh Shit

And there's a reason why everyone and their mom has seen the dragon's appearance, which uses the architecture to create the effect of diegetic paneling. Shirahama is an otherworldly artist and you can't always expect a TV anime adaptation to match her, whether directly or through reimaginations

The events covered this week in particular are a reminder that you can't always compete. The casual wonder of Coco's first experience in town is something the opening alluded to with paneling of its own, but sometimes the author is just too good at using their tools

Another episode of Witch Hat Atelier that kicks off with a beautiful attempt to breathe life into the magic that Shirahama's illustrations imply, rather than merely redrawing them to lesser effect. The match cuts between sigils and the corresponding elemental magic spirits are soooooooo good
