Epigenetic fingerprints link early-onset colon and rectal cancer to pesticide exposure - Nature Medicine An analysis of exposome traits in patients with early-onset colorectal cancer (CRC) (<50 years) compared with late-onset CRC (≥70 years) based on epigenetic markers shows that pesticide usage, in p...

Why are we seeing so much early-onset colorectal cancer?
The correlation with pesticide exposure and its epigenetic signature, adjusted for all known risk factors. (doesn't establish cause and effect)

Early-onset CRC incidence is rising, and we don't know why. Using methylation marks, we link different exposures, like diet, smoking and a pesticide, to early- onset CRC. This work comes from a collaboration with Elena Elez's team at @vhio.bsky.social

Accelerating discovery of cancer causes for prevention in the era of rising early-onset cancers Rising early-onset cancers challenge existing frameworks for understanding and managing cancer. This perspective outlines a roadmap for addressing this challenge by advancing the discovery of cancer causes, cancer risk assessment, and cancer preventability characterization.

Distinctive DNA sequence features define epigenetic longevity of inflammatory memory Tissues harbor memories of inflammation, which heighten sensitivity to diverse future assaults. Whether and how these adaptations are sustained through time and cell division remain poorly understood....

I am very pleased with our latest paper showing that cells can remember past injury for a long time! Here a simple interpretable AI was used as a discovery tool to pinpoint the DNA code and biological mechanism. Big foundation models failed. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

It’s well known that inflammation increases cancer risk, but how?

The answer: the epigenome "remembers" inflammation and primes stem cells for cancer.
