Why are we seeing so much early-onset colorectal cancer?
The correlation with pesticide exposure and its epigenetic signature, adjusted for all known risk factors. (doesn't establish cause and effect)

🔬 Un estudio del @vhio.bsky.social publicado en Nature Medicine analiza por primera vez cómo el exposoma (entorno y estilo de vida) puede influir en el cáncer colorrectal en menores de 50 años a través de cambios en el ADN.
NEW 📄! Our last Nature Medicine paper, led by @silvanamaas.bsky.social and @seoaneja.bsky.social , identifies picloram (herbicide) as a novel risk factor on early-onset colorectal cancer ( #eoCRC), while confirming well-known risk factors. www.nature.com/articles/s41.... #exposome #epigenetics +

Very proud of our amazing team at @cancercompbiolab.bsky.social, and especially of @silvanamaas.bsky.social, who led this study and drove the project from start to finish
Early-onset CRC incidence is rising, and we don't know why. Using methylation marks, we link different exposures, like diet, smoking and a pesticide, to early- onset CRC. This work comes from a collaboration with Elena Elez's team at @vhio.bsky.social
Delighted to share our new paper which has just been published in Nature Medicine. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
This is figure 1, which shows a high-resolution environmental model of pesticide risk across Peru, designed to support spatial cancer epidemiology.
An analysis in Nature Health reveals spatial patterns of pesticide exposure and liver tissue-derived molecular signatures across Peru, establishing links between pesticide usage and cancer insurgence at the national scale. go.nature.com/41hOBAK 🧪

I am very pleased with our latest paper showing that cells can remember past injury for a long time! Here a simple interpretable AI was used as a discovery tool to pinpoint the DNA code and biological mechanism. Big foundation models failed. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
It’s well known that inflammation increases cancer risk, but how?
The answer: the epigenome "remembers" inflammation and primes stem cells for cancer.

👇 Still a couple of days to apply to join our amazing team as a Research Scientist / Software Developer.
Apply if you want to build and maintain reproducible pipelines for large-scale genomic analysis to support our study of breast cancer cis-regulatory signatures and JASPAR, among other things.
What makes HR+ breast cancer tumors immune-cold?
New work shows how ER signaling hijacks LCOR, suppressing tumor immunogenicity.
Our PI @seoaneja.bsky.social participates on this study led by @tceliaterrassa.bsky.social, uncovering a target to sensitize tumors to ICB. www.jci.org/articles/vie...

Thanks to @vhio.bsky.social and @cancercoreeurope.bsky.social for this valuable opportunity for the next generation of cancer researchers 🔬
Studying cancer evolution needs multi-region or single cell seq for phylogenetics, right? Amazingly (I think!) we found single-sample bulk methylation suffices, via analysis of "fluctuating methylation". In @nature.com today led by brilliant @calumgabbutt.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/s41...
@jengreitz.bsky.social l & my lab want to co-hire a computational biologist/biostatistician with project management expertise to help map the regulatory code of the human genome and discover genetic mechanisms of disease.
